Although these variations are economical, they

provide only one backpressure valve downhole.

When cementing large-diameter casing, many

operators use the “innerstring” method of cement-
ing. To use this method, run the casing in the
conventional manner, and then lower a
workstring down to the floating equipment. Next,
pump the cement through the workstring. When
innerstring cementing, order floating equipment
with a sealing valve. See Pages 1-51 through 1-59
for more information about innerstring cementing.

By filling the casing with fluid while running tools

into the hole, operators can save rig time while
protecting the formation from pressure surges.

as it is run into the hole. Follow the installation and
operation guidelines on the following pages when
using an automatic fill device.

Formula 1 NOTE: See Section 210 of the Halliburton “Red

Book” to determine the capacity factor for casing.
Formula 1 is used to calculate the depth of the
float point. It compensates for the weight of dry
pipe above the mud return line (to the pit) that Example
will be available to help push the pipe in the hole.
For the following example, these conditions exist:
KCwt
F = ● Casing— 10 3/4-in. OD (40.5 lb/ft)
( 0. 0408) Dcsg 2 W − Cwt
● Mud weight—10.5 lb/gal
where
● 75-psi spring—PDF float shoe and collar
F = Depth of float point, ft

Cwt = Casing Weight, lb/ft

1. Use Formula 1 to determine the float point:
Dcsg = Casing diameter, in.

K = Length of dry pipe above mudline, ft 20 ( 40. 5)

F=
(0. 0408) (10. 75)2 (10. 5) − ( 40. 5)

Formula 2 F = 89. 83 ft
Formula 2 is used to calculate the depth necessary
to begin filling.
The casing will float at a depth of about 90 ft
assuming 20 ft of dry pipe is helping to push it
R
H = in the hole. If the distance between the slips
0. 05195W and mudline is less than 20 ft, the casing will
float at less than 90 ft.
where
2. Use Formula 2 to compare the depth of the
H = depth, ft float point to the depth required to open the
two 75-psi springs (shoe and collar):
R = sum of spring ratings, psi

W = mud weight, lb/gal

H =
(75 + 75)
0.05195 (10.5)

Formula 3 H = 275 ft
Formula 3 indicates the amount of casing that
may have to be filled to overcome the buoyancy of If H (275 ft) is greater than F (89.93 ft), you
the pipe. must fill a portion of the casing to overcome
buoyancy.
(0. 7854) Dcsg2 R − HCwt

WCcap 3. To determine the amount of fill required, use
Formula 3:
where
( 0. 7854) (10. 75)2 ( 75 + 75) − (275) ( 40. 5)
L = length of fill, ft L=
(10. 5) ( 4.1209)
Ccap = Capacity factor for casing, gal/ft
L = 57 ft

casing with one 150-psi or two 75-psi differential
fill valves in the casing. However, when filling the
pipe is necessary, fill it all the way to the surface,
even though calculations do not necessarily indi-
cate that this quantity of fill is required. This
additional fill will help you run the casing into the
hole.

the Insert Self-Fill float valve without tripping the
flapper valve. Drop a weighted plastic ball into the
casing when the casing is a few joints off bottom.
This ball, which is furnished with the assembly,
will seat on top of the orifice tube. Next, apply 500
to 800 psi of pressure to shear or break out the
orifice tube. The flapper valve can then be acti-
vated to hold pressure from below.

CAUTION: Use only a conventional guide

shoe below the Insert Self-Fill float valve. This
will prevent the tripping ball from lodging in the
hole, preventing further cementing.

Guide Shoes

Halliburton guide shoes and Down-Jet guide shoes

have three major purposes:

● to protect the casing string from impact when

landing on the hole bottom

● to direct casing away from ledges, reducing

the chance of sidewall cave-in

● to help casing pass through narrow, deviated

holes and areas with hard shoulders

The guide shoes have enough flow area to allow

for maximum pump rates on jobs where extremely
high solid/water ratios are used in well fluids.
These guide shoes are easily drillable and provide
ample seats for stopping cementing plugs. Down-
Jet guide shoes also have side ports through the
steel case that allow fluids to discharge through
both the cement nose and the ports. The jetting
action of the fluid through these ports helps re-
move cuttings and filter cake, and creates turbu-
lence around the shoe for better cement
distribution.

Casing Shoes

The Halliburton casing shoe is a steel reinforcing

collar installed on the bottom joint of casing to
help prevent casing abrasion or distortion as
casing is forced past obstructions on the wall of
the borehole.

The casing shoe is specially designed for use in

rotary- or cable-drilled shallow wells where it is
not necessary to guide or float the casing to bot-
tom. The illustration and specifications table on
this page provide additional information about
Halliburton casing shoes.

Pot Life
Halliburton Weld A Casing
Compound After Halliburton Weld A has set, connections
cannot be broken except by heating the joint to
550° F. The pot life of the mixture will remain in a
workable consistency from 40 minutes to 1 1/2
Halliburton Weld A is used to lock threaded con- hours, depending on temperatures. Elevated
nections tightly and permanently on any casing temperatures reduce the pot life, while direct
string. Based on test results, more torque is re- exposure to moisture, such as rain, accelerates
quired to break joints locked with this compound setting time.
than the torque required to break tack-welding.

Directions

1. Remove couplings before installing the casing.

Thoroughly clean both male and female
threads. Use solvent and a brush to remove
all thread dope, oil, and grease. Use a suitable
paint and lacquer remover to clean threads
that are coated with paint or lacquer.

2. Dry the threads thoroughly before applying

Halliburton Weld A compound.

3. Thoroughly mix the contents of the can, and

then pour the full contents of the accompany-
ing bottle of converter into can of compound
and stir it thoroughly. A 1-lb can is generally
adequate for making up at least two 9 5/8-in.
or four 5 1/2-in. casing connections.

CAUTION: Avoid contact with the skin or

eyes. Use soap and water to remove tacky
film from hands and skin.

4. Apply Halliburton Weld A to both the male

and female threads with a suitable applicator,
making sure that the threads are completely
coated. Immediately make up the joint to the
final torque and run it into the hole without
delay.
