impeller CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
A centrifugal pump is a mechanical device designed to
move a fluid by means of the transfer of rotational
inlet
energy from one or more driven rotors, called impellers.
Fluid enters the rapidly rotating impeller along its axis and
volute is cast out by centrifugal force along its circumference
through the impellers vane tips.

ROTARY PUMP
suction discharge
Rotary pumps are most commonly used to circulate lubricating
oil in mechanical equipment or to provide pressure for
rotor hydraulic operating systems. The oil used in these systems is
usually cleaned by filtering. The pumped fluid lubricates the

Delivery valve A reciprocating pump is a class of positive-

displacement pumps that includes the piston pump, plunger

piston Connecting rod pump, and diaphragm pump. Well maintained, reciprocating
pumps can last for decades. Unmaintained, however, they
can succumb to wear and tear. It is often used where a

where delivery pressure is quite large. In reciprocating

pumps, the chamber that traps the liquid is a stationary
cylinder that contains a piston or plunger.

DEEP WELL PUMP
Deep-well jet pumps are also above the ground, but they draw
water by using two pipes. One of these pipes draws water out

Stents of the well, while the other pushes the water up. A deep well
jet pump sucks up water from depths as great as 110 feet,
and a foot valve is necessary for priming the pipe.

2. What is meant by pump performance curve? Draw a complete pump performance curve for
centrifugal pump. Label each correspondingly.
- The performance curve and system characteristics are used to dimension and select pumps. Get

3. What do you mean by specific speed? How do you calculate the Ns of pump.
Specific speed is an index used to predict desired pump or turbine performance. i.e. it predicts the
general shape of a pumps impeller. It is this impellers shape that predicts its flow and head
characteristics so that the designer can then select a pump or turbine most appropriate for a
particular application.
