UNIT (S): Numbers
TOPIC: Indices
DATE: JAN 14 - 18, 2019
DURATION: One Week
STANDARDS:
 Use the basic operations, number facts, patterns, calculators and software to compute and
estimate in order to solve real world problems involving fractions, percentages and
decimals.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
Students should be able to:
 Understand how to work out indices.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Students should be able to:
 State the meaning of am, when a and m are rational numbers after class discussion.
 Simplify expressions using the laws of indices after demonstration.
 Evaluate expressions of the form am and am × bn where a, b, m, n, are whole numbers,
integers, fractions.

KEY SKILLS:
 Record data, make observation, analyze information

KEY VOCABULARY:
 Indices, rational, laws of indices, expression, whole numbers, exponent, integers

RESOURCES:
Textbook, activity sheets, calculator

PRIOR LEARNING:
Check that students can:
 Write numbers to a given number of decimal places and significant figures.
 Express place values of digits in all bases including base 10.

LEARNING OUTCOME:
Students will be able to:
 Simplify expressions correctly
 Evaluate expressions correctly

TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Students will be engaged in a discussion to recall what they learnt about indices from grade 8

Students will then be asked questions like; what are rational numbers? Responses will be
discussed.
Students will be asked to show am written as a rational number. Responses will be discussed.
Through demonstration and discussion students will be guided to discover that rational numbers
are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction.
E.g. am

Examples of questions will be worked out on the board

Students will be called to work out questions on the board.

The following will then be written on the board;

Individual students will be called upon to try and work the question. A discussion will follow
after to clear up any misconceptions that may occur.
Through further discussion students will be guided as follows;

This question will then be written on the board;
