Subject: Mathematics Topic: Simultaneous Equation Grade Level: 9
(Elimination Method when
coefficients are the same)

Student Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson at least 85% of the class should be able
to:

1. Define the terms simultaneous and eliminate

2. State ALL the rules of elimination in solving simultaneous equations
3. Calculate sets of equation by the elimination method
 When signs are the same
 When coefficients are the same
4. Solve simultaneous linear equations by method of Elimination with at least 80%
accuracy.

Materials Needs:

 Lesson plan
 Laptop
 Projector
 PowerPoint Presentation
 Textbook
 Whiteboard
 Whiteboard Markers
Activities/Procedures:
Mode of engagement: In class
Students will be shown a PowerPoint presentation on simultaneous equations which will
capture these objectives:
 Define the term simultaneous and eliminate

 State the ALL rules of elimination in solving simultaneous equations

 Calculate sets of equation by the elimination method

 When signs are the same

 When signs are different
 When coefficients are different
Introduction:
A fruits stand will be setup in a section of the classroom. Two students will be selected at
random and told that they will need to go to the stand and buy two different types of fruits the
only stipulation is that they both have to buy the same fruits and one fruit must be the same
quantity for both of them.
Senario example:
Student 1 went to the fruit stand and he/she purchased 2 bags of grapes and 3 bags
of pineapples, together she spent $400.
Student 2 went to the fruit stand and he/she purchased the same kind of fruits.
He/she bought 2 bags of grapes and 5 bags of pineapples. Together she spent a total
of $600.
The selected students will be asked to write an algebraic equation to represent their purchases.
A guided discussion will ensue to ensure the equations are correctly written and to get the
feedback from the class to make sure that they are all following and on the same page.
Then the following questions will then be asked.
1. Did the fruits cost the same for both students? Yes/no
2. What do you notice about the two equtions? Two diferent variables, one variable has
the same coefficient for both equations.
3. Can each be solved as they are written on their own? no
4. What would you have done to solve these equations? Any answer

Activities:
1. Students will be guided through a PowerPoint presentation which will outline the
concept and procedures for solving simultaneous equations using the method of
Elimination. A discussion will then ensue to highlight the concept of simultaneous
equations and the method of elimination from the PowerPoint and clear up any
misconceptions that may occur. Then, through demonstration the teacher will further
reinforce the concept.
2. Students will then be asked to derive and list their own strategies involved in solving
the simultaneous equations through the elimination method from the demonstration.

Closure: The teacher will provide some detailed notes on the termilogies that were introduced
earlier in the lesson and also some clarification to the above investigation.
Culminating Activity: Students will be asked to use the strategies they came up with to solve a
series of equations using the elimination method.

Assessment:

2x + 4y = 14
4x + 4y = 4

6a + b = 18
4a + b = 14

3h + 5i = 19
3h + 2i = 13

5r + 4t = 22
3r + 4t = 18

6m + 5n = 28
6m + 2n = 22

BONUS
7f + 4g = 40
9f – 4g = 24
