Hello, my names Emily and in this documentary, I’m going to be examining the role of the social media
influencer in today’s society.

I’m then going to ask what the benefits and drawbacks of this emergent form of communication can be for
(a) the individual and (b) wider society.

With social media influencing you can be really TikTok done and edited with music

Personally mine is fashion, gym and lifestyle.

Zoella Sugg was the first well known influencer, she

started in 2009 and is still doing it now in 2023. She
has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube. Pic of Zoella
In 2014 Zoe launched her Zoella beauty range of
cosmetics and with that being successful later on
she launched a range of complementary homeware Zoella’s chart
products. With a 2019 report stating that the two
businesses had combined a revenue of £3.8 million

Instagram – In 2010 Instagram was launched, it gave

In 2013 Instagram introduced the
option for paid advertisements and this has
increased the amount of money that a social media
influencer can earn. This is called monetisation and

platforms

Technology has improved over the years with

software and phones allowing the camera quality to
be really good and professional looking.
The first iPhone with a camera was in 2007, it was

and a 2 megapixel camera.

Today one of the most popular social media

influencers is Molly Mae Hague. She became famous
after appearing on the 2019 season of love island.
Before she went on the programme she was a part
time lifeguard and influencer. She became popular
on the programme and became runners up with
tommy fury, this really helped her outcome when

Molly- Mae became creative director of Pretty Little

Why is she popular?

The products and companies she promotes are both
affordable but also can be higher price to make
them desirable.

The drawbacks of social media-

Negative audience and comments which might be
personal and hurtful,
You may feel potentially isolated as you are mainly
working on your own and not as a team.
All the effort invested in a video and there can be no
guarantee of reward and it doing well.

For example, Caroline Flack was a tv presenter and

although she was not an influencer, she did a lot on
social media, so was often in the public eye. The
negative and horrible comments got to her and she
tragically took her own life on 15th February 2020.

Sadly, some social media influencers are affected

with poor mental health as they always have to be
seen to be available to their followers. This can
cause ‘burnout’ and often leads to depression if the disappointed
follower numbers drop off or they do not post

My intention in this documentary was to see how much social media and the influencers who use it have
had any effect on today’s society.

I think I have been able to show how social media influencing has changed since 2009 compared to how it is
used today. I think I have been able to show that while we have lots of exciting technology to use and make
money from, there is a dark side to the subject and influencers and followers need to be aware of this.

My interview with Michael has shown me that social media influencing can be a great thing to get in to but
the drawbacks are always there.

I enjoyed recording my own attempt as this is the area I want to go into professionally. I am already an
ambassador to two clothing and beauty brands and enjoying being an influencer, but researching this
subject has also shown me to be careful with my mental health.
