It's all about General Aguinaldo's proclamation of independence in
Kawit, Cavite. The proclamation was read by Ambrosio Rianzares
Bautista on June 12, 1898.

Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, a lawyer and confidant of General
Emilio Aguinaldo, was born on December 7, 1830, in Bian, Laguna,
and raised in the town of San Juan. It was in 1865 that he received
his bachelor's degree in law from the University of Santo Tomas
(UST) in Manila. In the following years, he worked as a lawyer in
Manila, where he provided free legal aid to those in need of
assistance.

The Filipino people declare their independence from the Spanish
Empire in this declaration. The Spanish colonial administration began
abusing its authority in 1531, as documented here. The Declaration
was not recognized by the United States or Spain as a result of the
Treaty of Paris, which ceded the Philippines to the United States. The
Philippines earned independence from the United States and Japan
on July 4, 1946, after more than 50 years as a colony.

Accordingly, General Aguinaldo thought that it was necessary to declare the


independence of the Philippines to inspire the people to fight more eagerly against the
Spaniards.
