BIOLIGY LAB 2

Date: 8th November, 2022

Title: Ecology
Aim: To determine the diversity of soil invertebrates in the Promenade Gardens
Materials/Apparatus: 1. Note Pad
2. Pen
3. Garden Trowel
4. Ruler
Diagram:
Method:
1. Randomly select an area in the National Park
2. Dig a hole that is 30 cm long, 20 cm wide and 10 cm deep
3. Record all observations for invertebrates found in the soil
4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times
Results:
Draw a table and put the title of the table above it
Calculate the biodiversity using Simpson diversity index:
∑n(n−1)
Simpson Diversity Index (D) = 1 -
N (N−1)
∑- sum of/total
n- number of individuals of each different specie
N- total number of individuals of all species
Discussion:
1. Define ecology
2. Define diversity
3. Explain what you found at each hole and why you think they were there/possible reasons
for their presence
4. What were the surroundings of each animal like? What did you find near the area they
were found?
5. What was the soil like at each hole? Type of soil?
Limitations: if any
Sources of errors: at least 2
Precautions: at least 2
Conclusion: relate to aim
