Laws of Thermodynamics

SA No. 28

Given: Q H =2000 J QC = -700

A. B.

W= Q H + QC The work is done on the system, because the

value of W is negative. Wherein, negative value of
works means that the system released about 2 700 J of
energy to the surroundings.
W= 2000J – 700HJ
W=1300

Given:

m=3.5 L=3.35 x 105 J/kg Tk=0˚ C + 273= 273K

Q
ΔS = Q = ml
T

Q = mL
= 3.5kg x 3.35 x 105 J/kg
= 1172500J
1172500 J
ΔS =
273 K
= 4294.9J/K

SA No. 30

Given:
TH = 70 + 273 = 343K TC = 120 + 273 = 393K
η = (TH – Tc/TH) 100%
393 K − 343 K
η=
393 K
= 12.72%

1. The efficiency of the human body in converting chemical potential energy into
useful work is known as the mechanical efficiency of the body. Thermal energy
generated during the chemical reactions that power muscle contractions along
with friction in joints and other tissues reduce the efficiency of humans to
about 25%.
2. The reason that the freezing of water does not violate the second law is
because even though the system (ice) becomes more ordered and has lower
entropy, the energy that is released to the surroundings makes those molecules
move faster, which leads to an increase in the entropy of the surroundings.

1. You cannot win (that is, you cannot get something for nothing, because matter
and energy are conserved). You cannot break even (you cannot return to the
same energy state, because there is always an increase in disorder; entropy
always increases). You cannot get out of the game (because absolute zero is
unattainable).
