Problem 1

Shaft A rotates at 500rev/min and carries an 80 tooth 1mm module externally cut spur gear which mates with
a 35 tooth wheel on shaft B.

1. Calculate the speed and direction of rotation of shaft B.

2. Specify the centre distance between shaft A and B.
3. Describe the effect of introducing an idler wheel between the gears on shaft A and B.

(-1142rev/min; 57.5mm; only reverses rotation of B wrt A)

Problem 4
Figure 1 shows a double reduction gear where shaft A drives shaft B via the
C
D compounded pair C-D. If gears A, B, C and D have 25, 85, 80 and 20 teeth
C D respectively and the angular speed of shaft A is 3000 rpm, find:

1. the speed and direction of rotation of shaft B;

2. the centre distance X between the primary axis and the layshaft carrying
A B the compounded pair if all the gears have a 1.25mm module;
3. the contact force between mating teeth on wheels A and C if shaft A is a
A torque of 12Nm.
