1. Find the energy in electronvolts, of one photon at a wavelength of 1 um.

2. The speed of light in material A is 2.00 x 108 m/s. Determine the refractive index of the material.

3. Light travels from air into an optical fiber with an index of refraction of 1.44. If the angle of incidence
on the end of the fiber is 22o, what is the angle of refraction inside the fiber?

4. A fiber has an index of refraction of 1.6 for the core and 1.4 for the cladding. Calculate the critical
angle.

5. A fiber has an index of refraction of 1.6 for the core and 1.4 for the cladding. Calculate angle of
refraction for angle of incidence of 70 degrees

6. An optical fiber is made of glass with a surface index of 1.55 and is clad with another glass with a refractive
index of 1.51. Launching takes place on air. Determine the numerical aperture of the fiber.

7. Calculate the angle of acceptance of the fiber in the previous problem.

8. A single-mode fiber is made with core diameter of 10 microns and is coupled to a light source with a wavelength
of 1.2 microns. Its core glass has a refractive index of 1.55. Determine the cladding index required for producing
single-mode propagation.

9. A single-mode fiber has a numerical aperture of 0.15. What is the maximum core diameter it could have for use
with infrared light with a wavelength of 820 nm?
