Project- Based Design for Deep Foundation
Semester October 2022 – February 2023

1. Introduction

This group project is a part of a continuous assessment which consists of 10% of the overall
marks. This project-based learning involves an open-ended complex problem related to
geotechnical evaluation to design the safe and suitable foundation according to the soil
properties of the proposed site. This project is divided into two (2) tasks as described in the
following paragraphs.

Task 1 involves the analysis of data from the soil investigation report (including the
subsurface profile and laboratory data) to identify the soil properties and strength behaviour.
This task requires the students to apply their fundamental knowledge (WK3) and specialist
knowledge (WK4) of soil mechanics.

Task 2 involves analysing and designing a suitable deep foundation based on the soil
properties. Task 2 involves a complex engineering problem and requires the demonstration
of four (4) knowledge profiles (WK3, WK4, WK5 and WK6) by students to design a stable
foundation structure (WK5) and determine the suitable shape of foundation in engineering
practices (WK6).

This project is designed to address two (2) specific course outcomes (COs) and two (2)
programme outcomes (POs). It is constructively aligned to the complex engineering problems
(WPs) and specified knowledge profiles (WKs), as shown in Table 1.

2. Learning Outcomes

At the end of this project, the students should be able to:

1. Analyse the Site Investigation (SI) report and prepare a report regarding to the soil properties of
the proposed site.

2. Design the deep foundation based on the soil parameters.

3. Justify the suitable shape of the pile based on soil properties and methods at the selected
location.

3. Project Statement

3.1 Executive Summary

The client intends to develop one (1) block of a service apartment on Lot 1191 and Lot 1637, Jalan
Ipoh Kecil, Seksyen 46, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. The proposed site is located on a
sloping terrain. Soil investigation (SI) has been carried out to explore the soil properties of the
proposed site. Fair to moderately weathered LIMESTONE were encountered varying depths from 8.9
m below ground level to 26.3 m. The factual report contains recorded sub-surface information with
field test (Standard Penetration Test), and laboratory test results of selected soil samples are
attached to determine the soil properties and analyse the suitability and stability of the foundation for
the proposed development. As a Consultant Engineer appointed by the client of the project, the
student is assigned to design a suitable deep foundation for the proposed project.

3.2 Instruction for Task 1 – Analyse the soil properties. (CO1-PO2)

The student is required to analyse the factual report consisting of a borehole log and data from the
laboratory tests to design the suitable deep foundation for a proposed service apartment.

Describe the soil properties based on the borehole log and laboratory data attached in Appendix 1.

- Explain the type of soil based on the particle size distribution data and borehole log. Analyse
the plasticity behaviour based on Atterberg Limit data.
- Evaluate the shear strength characteristic based on the Consolidation Undrained Triaxial
Compression Test data and SPT N value.

3.3 Instruction for Task 2 – Design the Deep Foundation. (CO2-PO3)

The student is required to design the deep foundation for a proposed development based on the soil
investigation report.

- Design the suitable foundation by evaluating the pile capacity of the proposed deep
foundation
- The design application is not limited to an empirical or semi-empirical method (please include
the equation/ code/ guideline reference)
- The soil parameter used in the design must be referred to the soil properties given in the
factual report (Appendix 1)
- The design must pass the factor of safety of 2.0
- Analyse the design for two different shapes of the pile (Square and Circular) with two (2)
different foundation depths. Identify the most preferable and optimised size commonly
adopted in civil engineering practices.
- Carry out the comparative analysis of the difference in depth for the two (2) shapes of pile
design. Justify and suggest the proposed pile design with the stability attained.
- You may also refer to any available code/ guideline for soil factor and coefficient (by stating
the reference made).

3.4 Report Format

Prepare your report in a format consisting of the following:

a) Cover page
b) Introduction
c) Content for Task 1
d) Content for Task 2
e) Conclusion
f) References
g) Attach the performance criteria matrix on the last page of the report
