FUTURE SIMPLE: WILL / WON´T

This lesson introduces the future form will. The form should be easy for students to
understand and use, it is just will/won’t followed by the infinitive (verb without to).
Remind students that will is often contracted to ‘ll.

From WILL we can take the adjective WILLING and the noun WILLINGNESS. If I am
willing to do something it means that I am ready or prepared to do it. I don’t have any
problems or objections.
He isn’t WILLING to do his homework.
His WILLINGNESS to do his homework today is = ZERO.

(YEARS, MINUTES, HOURS, DAYS etc.) will always have an apostrophe (‘) after the s.
I’ll go home in 3 hours’ time. = (I´ll go home at 9pm.)
Will you finish your course in 2 years’ time? = (Will you finish your course in 2023?)

LESSON #16
FUTURE INTENTION: TO BE GOING TO

61
TO BE + GOING + TO INFINITIVE
TO BE + GONNA + INFINITIVE

This is used to talk about our plans and intentions for the future, particularly plans
that we have already decided.

At this point, students probably have been using WILL to talk about their plans, simply
because it is an easier form, but from here on we should focus on getting students to
use GOING TO when talking about their future plans. It isn’t necessarily incorrect to
use WILL, it just isn’t so commonly used, so it’s a good idea to encourage students to
use GOING TO.

If the students are comfortable using this form, you can introduce the contracted
form that is used when speaking (SLANG - I’m gonna study). But remind them that this
is informal, and isn’t generally used in writing.

TO BE + GOING + TO WILL + VERB

Eu estou indo falar inglês. Eu falarei inglês.
Ele/Ela está indo falar inglês. Ele/Ela falará inglês.
Nós estamos indo falar inglês. Nós falaremos inglês.

READING - TALKING ABOUT THE FUTURE

John is ten years old, and he is a very lazy boy. He goes to school of course, but he is
bored there and he tries to do as little work as possible. He is having lunch with his
parents and they are having a very nice conversation about his future. His mother and
his father are both doctors and they think that John is going to be a doctor too.

But during the lunch for their surprise John says, “When I finish school, I ‘m going to
become a garbage collector”.

63
“A garbage collector?” his mother asks. She is very disappointed. “It’s not a very
pleasant job. And why are you going to become a garbage collector?”
“Because I’m going to work only one day a week”, John answers.
“Only one day a week?” his mother says. “What do you mean?”
“Well”, John answers, “I know that the garbage truck comes to our house only on
Wednesday, so they work only a day per week!”.
