LESSON#10
MODAL VERBS
Os verbos modais em inglês são uma classe pequena de verbos que são usados como
auxiliares de um outro verbo principal em uma frase. Os principais verbos modais são:
1. CAN
O verbo modal "can" geralmente significa "poder" ou "ser capaz de" fazer algo. Ele
também pode ser usado para falar sobre habilidades e coisas que saibamos fazer.
Use Examples
ability to do sth. in the present I can speak English.
permission to do sth. in the present Can I go to the cinema?
request Can you wait a moment, please?
offer I can lend (borrow) you my car till tomorrow.
suggestion Can we visit Grandmother at the weekend?
possibility It can get very hot in Arizona.
32
Who CAN help me? One moment, please….
What CAN you DO now? I CAN……study/eat/work now
Where CAN you GO now? I CAN GO …… home; to the park; to the gym now
2. COULD
O verbo modal "could" tem dois significados diferentes. O primeiro seria o condicional
do "can", algo que seria como o "poderia" em português. Ele é muitas vezes usado em
perguntas como uma versão mais formal e polida do "can".
Use Examples
ability to do sth. In the past I couldn´t speak English 10 years ago.
Permission to do sth. In the past I could go to the cinema.
Polite question * Could I go to the cinema, please?
Polite request * Could you wait a moment, please?
Polite offer * I could lend you my car till tomorrow.
Polite suggestion * Could we visit Grandma at the weekend?
33
Possibility * It could get very hot in Montana.
* These are no past forms, they refer to the future.
3. MAY
O verbo modal "may" expressa a possibilidade de algo ser realizado. Ele também pode
ter o sentido de dar ou pedir uma permissão. Ainda podemos traduzi-lo como "poder",
assim como o "can", mas o seu uso é muito mais formal.
Use Examples
possibility It may (70%) rain today.
permission to do sth. in the present May I go to the cinema?
Polite (educadíssimo) suggestion May I help you, Madam?
4. MIGHT “maigt”
34
O verbo modal "might" é bem similar ao "may" no sentido de expressar a possibilidade
de algo ser realizado. Porém, ele expressa uma possibilidade menos provável que o
"may".
Use Examples
possibility (less possible than may) * It might (30%) rain today.
hesitant offer * Might I help you?
5. MUST
O verbo modal "must" geralmente significa "dever" ou "ter que" fazer algo, nesse
sentido de obrigação. Ele também pode indicar "dever" no sentido de uma suposição.
Use Examples
force, necessity I must go to the supermarket today.
possibility You must be tired.
advice, recommendation You must see/watch the new film with Brad Pitt.
35
6. SHALL
O verbo modal "shall também pode ser usado para sugestões; oferecimentos; dar ou
pedir um conselho ou uma sugestão. Ele costuma ser menos usado do que o "should".
Somente utilizado na primeira pessoas singular e plural. WE/I
Use Examples
suggestion Shall I carry your bag?
Ask advice What shall I do?
36
Offer Shall I open the window? Yes, please. No, thanks.
7. SHOULD
O verbo modal "should" geralmente é usado para dar um conselho, algo que seria como o
"deveria" em português. É como uma versão mais suave do "must". Ele também pode ser
usado para perguntar a opinião de alguém ou dar sugestões.
Use Examples
advice You should drive carefully in bad weather.
Obligation You should switch off the light when you leave the room.
37
8. WILL
O verbo modal "will" na maioria das vezes será usado para formar o futuro em inglês.
Use Examples
wish, request, demand, order Will you please shut/close the door?
(less polite than would)
prediction, assumption I think it will rain on Friday.
promise I will stop smoking.
spontaneous decision Can somebody drive me to the station? - I will.
habits She's strange, she'll sit for hours without talking.
9. WOULD
O verbo modal "would" geralmente é usado para formar o tempo verbal que seria
equivalente ao nosso Condicional ou Futuro do Pretérito em português, como nas
conjugações "faria", "iria", "comeria", etc.
Use Examples
wish, request Would you shut the door, please?
(more polite than will)
habits in the past Sometimes he would bring me some flowers.

FUTURE SIMPLE: WILL / WON´T
This lesson introduces the future form will. The form should be easy for students to
understand and use, it is just will/won’t followed by the infinitive (verb without to).
Remind students that will is often contracted to ‘ll.
From WILL we can take the adjective WILLING and the noun WILLINGNESS. If I am
willing to do something it means that I am ready or prepared to do it. I don’t have any
problems or objections.
He isn’t WILLING to do his homework.
His WILLINGNESS to do his homework today is = ZERO.

LESSON #16
FUTURE INTENTION: TO BE GOING TO
61
TO BE + GOING + TO INFINITIVE
TO BE + GONNA + INFINITIVE
This is used to talk about our plans and intentions for the future, particularly plans
that we have already decided.
At this point, students probably have been using WILL to talk about their plans, simply
because it is an easier form, but from here on we should focus on getting students to
use GOING TO when talking about their future plans. It isn’t necessarily incorrect to
use WILL, it just isn’t so commonly used, so it’s a good idea to encourage students to
use GOING TO.
If the students are comfortable using this form, you can introduce the contracted
form that is used when speaking (SLANG - I’m gonna study). But remind them that this
is informal, and isn’t generally used in writing.
