In this activity, you will learn about the different types of lines and angles.
Line segment: A line segment has two end points with a definite length.
Ray: A ray has one end point and infinitely extends in one direction.
Straight line: A straight line has neither starting nor end point and is of infinite length.
Perpendicular lines: When there is a right angle between two lines, the lines are said to be
perpendicular to each other.
Parallel lines: Two lines, both in the same plane, that never intersect. Here, A and B are two
parallel lines, intersected by a line p.
Intersecting lines
Two or more lines that meet at a point are called intersecting lines. That point would be on
each of these lines. In Figure 1, lines l and m intersect at Q.
Names of an Angle
Acute angle: The angle that is between 0° and 90° is an acute angle, ∠A in the figure
below.
Obtuse angle: The angle that is between 90° and 180° is an obtuse angle, ∠B as shown
below.
Right angle: The angle that is 90° is a Right angle, ∠C as shown below.
Straight angle: The angle that is 180° is a straight angle, ∠AOB in the figure below.
Supplementary angles: If the sum of two angles is 180° then the angles are called
supplementary angles.
Complementary angles:
If the sum of two angles is 90° then the two angles are called complementary angles.
Adjacent angles:
The angles that have a common arm and a common vertex are called adjacent angles.
In the figure above, ∠BOA and ∠AOC are adjacent angles. Their common arm is OA and
common vertex is ‘O’.

Activity 1
This lesson will discuss about the angles. But before we proceed, let us first discuss where it
all starts – with a line. Also we are going to find out the different types of lines. But before we
proceed, let us look at the Figure 1.
Activity 2
Identify what kinds of angles are in the pictures below.
Activity 3
Hidden Angles
Look at the picture of the bicycle below. Can you see different angles that can be drawn from
it? Try to identify and draw 6 angles from the picture (2 angles per angle type). Write what
type of angle are they (acute, obtuse or right angle). An example was already given at
number 1.
ANGLE NAME TYPE
Activity 4
Choose the letter of the correct answer.
Reflection:
How important is our knowledge of the lines and angles in our daily lives?
