Biosphere is the area of the Earth

where life exists. It is the sum total of all

the ecosystems found in the planet.

Biosphere

The biosphere is divided into regions called biomes.

Biomes are the largest of the levels of organization in the
biosphere.
Habitat, Ecosystem, and Biome
Habitat refers to the type of environment
in which organisms live.

Ecosystem is concerned, not just with the

physical environment, but also with the living
things that interact with it.

Biome refers to a large region characterized by

(1) a particular pattern of the annual temperature
and participation distribution and
(2) a predominant vegetation type.

Tundra
• This is known as the world's coldest biome,
covering one-fifth of the planet's surface.
• Due to the short growth season and permafrost,
there are almost no trees which can penetrate to
establish their roots.
Tundra
• Lichens, mosses, grasses, sedges, and shrubs are
examples of plants that grows only during the
brief summer season.
• In order to survive, all animals must adapt.
Tundra
• In order to survive, all animals must adapt.
(1)Many birds come to the tundra to breed in the
summer, but most migrate to warmer climates in the
winter.
(2)Some of the animals have blubber (thick fats) and
developed thick fur that turns white in the winter.
(3)Mice and other tiny mammals hibernate in safe
tunnels beneath the snow during the winter.
Polar Areas

Penguins
Polar bears

Walrus Arctic fox Seals

Desert
• Deserts are the warmest biome; however
they can also be freezing in the winter.
• Organisms in this biome must adapt to
extreme heat and a shortage of water.
• It is located in North and South America,
Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia.
Desert
• Plants in the desert have evolved to
gather and store water, as well as to
decrease water loss.
❖Cacti, tiny shrubs, and short grasses are
among the plants that grow in this area.
Desert
• Animals in this biome must adapt to extreme
heat and a shortage of water.
Some animals don't drink water; instead, they
acquire their water from the seeds and
plants they eat. Many animals are nocturnal
to avoid being exposed to the sun's heat.

Truth or Bluff
1. The term habitat, ecosystem, and biomes
are the same.
2. Tundra is the world's coldest biome,
covering one-fifth of the planet's surface.
3. In all season, tundra has almost NO trees.
Truth or Bluff
4. There are no plants in Tundra.
5. In order to survive, all animals in the desert
adapt through hibernation, migration, and thick
fur and fats.
6. Desert is hot in all season.
7. Some animals in the desert don’t drink water.
