A very important aspect of this game is for you to solve problems involving

Newton’s law of gravitation. It may come very easy for you, or it may take an
awful lot of hard work. You may have had previous experience with this and
only need enrichment of the lesson.

NEWTON’S LAW OF GRAVITATION
Every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle
with a force that is directly proportional to the product of the masses
of the particles and inversely proportional to the square of the distance
between them.
Mathematically, this translates into the force equation shown. In
this equation, the quantities are defined as:

= The force of gravity (typically in Newton)

G = The gravitational constant, which adds the proper level

of proportionality to the equation

= The masses of the two particles

(typically in kilograms)
r or d = The straight line distance between
the two particles (typically in meters)

What are the quantities present in the Newton’s gravitation equation?

The proportionalities expressed by Newton’s universal law of
gravitation are represented graphically by the following illustration.
Observe how the
force of gravity is
directly proportional
to the product of the
two masses and
inversely
proportional to the
square of the
distance
separation.

Another means of representing the proportionalities is to express the
relationships in the form of an equation using a constant of
proportionality. This equation is shown below.

What is the value of the gravitational constant?

Step 5. Write the final answer.

Turn on the next page and study the sample given . . .

Problem. Determine the force of gravitation between the earth
(m= 5.98 x10^24 kg) and a 70 kg student standing at sea level in a
distance of 6.38 x10^6 m from the earth’s center.
Gravitational force (Fg) Potential energy (PE)

Height (h) Kinetic Energy (KE)

mass of the 2nd object (m2) mass of the 1st object (m1)

weight (w) Gravitational field

Gravitational constant (G) distance (d or r)

Problem. How much force of attraction exists between two objects which have masses of 70 kg and
2000 kg and are separated by a distance of 1m?
Problem. What is the gravitational force of attraction between the moon and the earth if the mass of
the moon and earth are 7.4 x10^22 kg and 6.0 x10^24 kg, respectively? Note that the disturbance of
the earth from the moon is 3.8 x10^8 m.
Using the Second Law of Motion (Law of Acceleration) and the Law of Universal gravitation, the
acceleration due to gravity at a particular distance from a planet can be investigated. Suppose that
the force of gravitational attraction due to the spherical mass is equal to the net force in the Law of
Acceleration. To simplify, acceleration due to gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the
distance of the object from the Earth’s center. So, the further the object from the planet the smaller
is its acceleration due to gravity and has smaller attractive force on the object.
It implies that the acceleration due to gravity is constant everywhere on the surface of the
Earth, provided (a) that the Earth’s mass distribution is homogeneous and (b) the distance from the
center of the Earth to any location to its surface is the same. The acceleration due to gravity is inde-
pendent on the mass of the object because it is negligible compared to the mass of the Earth; thus
gravity is the same for all free falling objects.

A .Directions: Using your knowledge of Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation, reflect on the following question and try to
answer. Write your answer on your reflection notebook.

A. As a star ages, it is believed to undergo variety of changes. One of the last phase of the star’s life is gravitationally collapse into a black
hole. What will happen to the orbit of the planets of the solar system if our star (the sun shrinks into a black hole)?
B. Having completed her Physics course, Dawn has devised a new business pla based on her teacher’s Physics for Better Living Theme.
Dawn learn that objects weigh different amounts at different distances from Earth’s center. Her plan involves buying gold by the weight at
one altitude and then selling it at another altitude at the same price per weight. Should Dawn buy at high altitude and sell at low altitude or
vice versa? Why?
C. When comparing the mass and size ata for the planets Earth and Jupiter, it is observed the Jupiter is about 300 times more massive than
Earth. One might quickly conclude that an object on he surface of Jupiter would weigh 300 times more than one on the surface of the Earth.
For instance, one might expect a person who weighs 500N on Earth would weigh 150000N on surface of the Jupiter. Yet this is not the
case. In fact, a 500 N person on Earth weighs about 1500N on he surface of the Jupiter. Explain how can this be.
