ENGAGE How linear inequalities in two variables facilitate finding solutions to real-life problems and
Essential making decisions?
Question
EXPLORE Jessa is selling handmade bracelet for P150 each and necklace for P250 each. How
Analyzing many of both does she need to sell to make at most P1000?
Visual Model
Given: A bracelet costs P150 each
A necklace costs P250 each
Jessa needs to sell at most P1000.

Let x=¿ the number of bracelets sold and y=¿ the number of necklaces.

Income from selling the jewelry:1 5 0 (number

bracelets ) ( necklace )
of +2 5 0 number of
at most she needs

P1000.

5. What is the Linear Inequality?____________________

EXPLAIN  The mathematical statement,1 5 0 x +2 5 0 y ≤ 100 0 , is an example of linear

Discussion inequality in two variables.
 An ordered pair (𝑥, 𝑦) is a solution of a linear inequality if the inequality is true when
the values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 are substituted into the inequality.
 A linear inequality in two variables is an inequality that can be written in one of the
following forms: 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 > 𝐶, 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 < 𝐶, 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 ≥ 𝐶, 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 ≤ 𝐶, where 𝐴, 𝐵, and

𝐶 are real numbers and 𝐴 and 𝐵 are both not equal to zero.
 Note that these forms can also be written in slope-intercept form of linear inequality
as the following:
 y <mx+ b → y <2 x−3
 y >mx+ b → y >2 x−3
 y ≤ mx+b → y ≤ 2 x−3
 y ≥ mx+b → y ≥ 2 x−3 , where m=2 (slope) and b=−3 ( y−intercept )

 Graphing Linear Inequalities in two variables

 System of Linear Inequality in two variables Two or more

inequalities, considered simultaneously, form a system of linear
inequalities in two variables.
 The solution of the system of inequalities is the intersection region of all the
solutions in the system.
