“FACTORING”

Learning Competency : M8AL-Ia-b-1 The learner factors completely different types of polynomials
(polynomials with common monomial factor, difference of two squares and sum of two cubes)

INTRODUCTION:

A. Factoring Polynomials with Greatest Common Monomial Factor (GCMF)

Greatest Common Factor (GCF)


Finding a greatest common factor (GCF) is the process of identifying what numbers and variables are
group of terms has in common - in other words, what do they share?
Before looking at some examples, let's break down the phrase:
** Greatest = Largest ** Common = Shared ** Factor = Factored Piece
Example:
1. Factor 3x2 + 6x
Step 1: Factor each term completely.  3 • x • x+3 • 2• x
Step 2: Find all factors that are in common (the same in all terms) 3•x•x + 3•2•x
Greatest Common Factor = 3x
Step 3: Pull out the GCF and then divide every term by it

Step 4: Simplify each term (perform the division)


Factored Form = 3x (x + 2)

2. Factor 6 x +4 x 2 .
Step 1: Factor each term completely. 3 •2 • x +2• 2• x • x
Step 2: Find all factors that are in common (the same in all terms) 3 • 2 • x + 2• 2 • x • x
Greatest Common Factor = 2 x
Step 3: Pull out the GCF and then divide every term by it
6 x+ 4 x 2
=3+2 x

B. Factoring Polynomials with Difference of Two Squares

The factors of difference of two squares is the product of two binomials which is the sum and difference
of its square root of each term.

Steps in Factoring the Difference of Two Squares:


1. Take the square roots of the two terms.
2. Write the product of the sum and difference of the square roots.
Illustrative Example:
1. Factor x 2−4 y 2 using the difference of two squares method.
a. Take the square roots of the two terms.
√ x 2=x √ 4 y 2=2 y
b. Write the product of the sum and difference of the square roots.
( x +2 y)(x – 2 y)

Therefore, x −4 y = ( x +2 y)(x – 2 y)

C. Factoring Polynomials with Sum of Two Cubes

A polynomial in the forma 3+ b3 is called the sum of two


cubes.

Example : Factor:  x 3+ 64

Step 1: Get the cube root of each term and it is always positive at the
middle of both term.
Step 2: “Write What You See” If you disregard the parenthesis and the
cubes in step 1, you should see:

Step 3: “Square-Multiply-Square” If you square the first term, x, you get


x2. If you multiply the two terms, x and 4, you get 4x. Finally, if you
square the second term, 4, you get 16.

Step 4: “Same, Different. End on a Positive” This will determine the


signs of the problem. The first sign should be the same as the original
question, the next sign should be different then the first, and the last
sign should always be positive.

Step 5: Write the final answer. x 3+ 64=¿ ( x +4 )( x −4 x +16)
