Case III: Employee Motivation

Q.1: - What, according to you, were the reasons for Rohit’s disillusionment? Answer the
question using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Ans: - According to me the reason of Rohit’s disillusionment is not attaining psychological
needs and self-fulfilment needs referring to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. He had fulfilled
his basic needs which is physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest) and safety needs
(security, safety). Rohit wasn’t able to achieve the three needs which are:
 Love and belongingness needs: The need for interpersonal relationships which
motivates behaviour (example: friendship, trust, acceptance, being part of a group,
etc) When Rohit came up with several possible solutions for the problem and was
excited to share it with Aparna and his colleagues thinking that they’ll be happy
seeing him put so much effort but instead he got ignorance. Aparna didn’t even listen
to him and his colleagues didn’t show much interest. Rohit must have felt that he
wasn’t a part of group and he wasn’t accepted.
 Esteem Needs: Esteem for oneself (example: dignity, achievement, independence).
The desire for reputation or respect from others (example: status, prestige) When he
received dullness and rawness from them, he must have loss the sense of
achievement and status at work.
 Self-actualization Needs: The realization of a person’s potential, self-fulfilment,
seeking personal growth and peak experiences.
Rohit work was influenced through the organizations current circumstance, steadily he started
to lose interest in his work. As he was unable to accomplish the previous needs it was
difficult to accomplish self-realization needs without accomplishing belongingness, love and
esteem needs.

Q.2: - What should Rohit do to resolve his situation? What can a team leader do to
ensure high levels of motivation among his/her team members?
Ans: - Rohit can try to resolve his situation by -

 Being Self-motivated to do work at his workplace even if the environment is not

in his favour, he can still think in a positive way and take it as a challenge.
 He can lower his expectations from the organisation and just focus on the work
whatever allotted and give his 100% to complete that work before time.
 He must adapt the change faster in order if not to worsen his performance.
 He can make his team leader and team members realize the importance of
supportive model where employees are encouraged for active participation, for
giving suggestions and how this model would lead into enhancing the overall
productivity at workplace because if employees are encouraged and appreciated
for giving suggestions, they would do their work productively.
To achieve high levels of motivation among the members, a team leader should do following
things -
 A team leader should always provide proper feedback to the team members. If the
employee completes his work successfully, the team leader must appreciate him
and if the employee fails to achieve some task, then the leader must provide him
with a constructive feedback. This would increase the motivation levels among the
team members and they would work harder.
 In case a team fails to achieve a target, the leader should not blame it on team
members.
 A team leader should not ignore the suggestions of his/her team members be it
small or big suggestions.
 Maintaining positivity at workplace is very necessary for employees to do work
efficiently.
