1. What is the largest division of the brain?

- The cerebrum is the largest division of the brain.

2. Identify the functions of the parts of the human brain?

A. CEREBRUM

-performs higher brain functions involved in sensations, voluntary actions, reasoning,

planning and problem solving.

-controls sensory impulses, voluntary motor responses, and voluntary processes.

a. Frontal Lobe

-controls voluntary muscular functions, moods, aggression, smell reception, and motivation.

b. Parietal Lobe

-control center for evaluating information of touch, pain, balance and temperature.

c. Temporal Lobe

-evaluates hearing input and smell

-involved with memory processes, abstract thoughts and judgment decisions.

d. Occipital Lobe

-back portion of the hemisphere

-receive and interpret visual input

B. DIENCEPHALON

-important part of the brain

-consists of: Thalamus and Hypothalamus

a. Thalamus

-provides general but nonspecific awareness of sensations such as pain, pressure, touch and
temperature

b. Hypothalamus

-communicates with thalamus, cerebrum and other parts of the brain

-controls all internal organs

-maintains homeostasis

C. BRAIN STEM

-joins higher brain centers to the spinal cord

a. Midbrain

-contains reflex centers for the head, eye and body movements in response to visual and auditory
stimuli.

b. Pons

-relay impulses from the medulla oblongata to the cerebrum and back to the medulla.

-works with the medulla oblongata to control rate and depth of breathing.

c. Medulla Oblongata

-connecting link with the spinal cord

-passageway in which nerves extend to and from the brain to the spinal cord and other organs.

D. CEREBELLUM

-control posture, balance and muscle coordination and produce a smooth gait.
