L9: STATES OF MATTER

Anything that
Atoms takes up
space and has
combine to mass is called
form matter.
molecules.
Matter is
made up of
very minute
LET’S particles
RECALL ! called
atoms.
Molecules are

the smallest
particles of a
substance that
show all the
properties of
that substance.
STATES OF MATTER
 Matter exists mainly in three
states- solids, liquids and
gases.

 Besides the three states of

matter, there are two more,
the fourth and fifth states
of matter. They are Plasma
and Bose-Einstein Condensate
(BEC).

 The arrangement of molecules

provide volume and shape to
any form of matter .
Did You
Know??

 The force of attraction

between molecules is
called the intermolecular
force of attraction and
the space between two
molecules is called the
intermolecular space.

 The more the

intermolecular force,
lesser is the
intermolecular space
and vice-versa.
Do by
yourself.

The given
pictures depict
the three states
of matter.

Interconversion of the states of matter

  The process of the change of matter from

one state to another is known as the
interconversion of the states of matter.

 Matter changes from one state to another

on heating or cooling.

 On heating, the molecules move faster with

maximum energy.

 On supplying enough heat, solids change to

liquids and liquids change to gases.

 Molecules slow down and come closer when

they are cooled. Evaporation
SUBLIMATION AND DESUBLIMATION
SUBLIMATION

Sublimation is the transition of a

substance directly from the solid to
the gaseous state, without passing
through the liquid state.
Eg: Sublimation of iodine, ammonium
chloride, naphthalene and dry ice.

DEPOSITION OR DESUBLIMATION

Desublimation is the transition of a

substance directly from the gaseous
state to the solid state, without
passing through the liquid state.
Eg: Deposition of iodine vapours to
form iodine crystals and gaseous
carbon dioxide to form dry ice.
In a nutshell......

 Physical state of matter

is dependent on the
energy of the particles.

 As the energy between

the particles increases,
force of attraction
decreases and the
movement of the
particles increases.
