Introduction

Problem Statement

Reading, writing, speaking and listening are the skills of learning English language. One

important among the four skills is speaking: the action of conveying information or expressing

one’s feelings in speech. Speaking is the effective way to communicate, to inform, to report, to

entertain, to encourage and to discuss immediately. The specific problem in classroom always

occurs is producing pronunciation of “S” sound with third person singular in speaking English.

Because of Khmer language doesn’t have ending sound.

Research Questions

1. How does the “Communicative” method help my class improve their speaking skill?

2. What problems does my class have with the lesson?

Research Objectives

The objectives of this study are to:

1. Explore how the “Communicative” method helps a class improve their speaking skill,

2. Uncover problems associated with the method and lesson, and

3. Improve the use of the method in future lessons.

Research Methods

Lesson Plan

We are going to use the following mini-lesson plan:

Objective/Target item: Present Simple with third person

Teaching method: Communicative Method

Teaching material: (Appendix A)

Step Expected
Time

1. Pre-speaking stage 5 mns

2. Main speaking stage 5 mns

3. Post speaking activity 10 mns

4. Developing positive attitude 5 mns

5. Close lesson 5 mns

Observation

We are going to observe the TESOL-senior class of 24 and take notes during the lesson.

After class, we are going to discuss and merge our notes to help answer our research questions.

The observation form is attached in Appendix B.

Document Collection

We are going to collect primary documents from the class such as worksheets.

Survey

Communicative method will be used in the Trapeang Prasat Class after the peer teaching. There

are 24 students in advance level, the age between 20 to 28. We are going to ask the students to

complete the survey paper that includes 20 questions of two parts: Benefit of the lesson and the

4
problems of the lesson.

Data Analysis

We are going to use inductive qualitative data analysis procedures to analyze the

observation data. First, the qualitative data will be manually coded. Then, the codes will be

compared and contrasted with each other using color coding.

We are going to use Microsoft Excel software for quantitative data analysis. First, the

quantitative data will be coded and tabulated. Then, simple statistics, such as sums and

percentages, will be formulated to develop tables. Finally, charts will be generated from the

tables.
