If you want to respond to bad news, you can use the following expression:
 I’m sorry to hear that.
 How awful!
 That’s too bad.
 Sorry to hear that.
 How terrible!

A. Label these conversation whether they deliver bad news or good news. Write

A : Have you heard that Nico and Olga are getting married?
B : Oh, really? I’m very glad to hear that. When is the wedding?

A : What happened to you? We waited for you so long and you didn’t appear, no call from
you as well.
B : Sorry, my uncle had a serious accident. He was badly injured. I had to go to
the hospital to see him.
A : How terrible! Sorry to hear that.

B : What letter?
A : I heard you pass the admission test.
B : Really? I can’t believe this.
A : Congratulation. I’m pleased to hear that.

Jun : Oh, HI Don…..it’s great, thanks. How’s everything with you?

Don : Well, thing couldn’t be better. As a matter of fact, I was promoted to


sergeant.
Jun : Wow….it’s great, I’m pleased to hear that
I’m sure you will have a good career in military.

Step of teaching and learning activities.

 Ask the student using the respond in the dialog.
 Students will practice the dialog with their friends.
