B. ANALYSIS (Pack your Bags)

The teacher explains the lesson by exploring through the luggage with different topical
things inside.

The way people express in an argument or discussion varies in different ways:

Agreement, Partial Agreement, and Disagreement

Agreement:
It is worthwhile saying that silence is not understood as agreement. If you
agree with an opinion or an idea, you are expected to say so.
 Expressions use to agree:
 I agree with you entirely.
 I totally agree with you.
 I simply must agree with that.
Disagreement:
Expressing disagreement is always respected as honest, and sometimes as
courageous.
 Expressions use to disagree:
 I don't agree with you.
 I’m sorry, but I disagree.
 I'm afraid, I can't agree with you.
Partial agreement:
You can also agree but with reservation especially when there is a doubt or
feeling of not being able to accept something completely.
 Expressions use to disagree:
 I agree with you in principle, but…
 I agree with you in part, but…
 Well, you could be right.

5 Ways to Respectfully Disagree

1. Do not make it personal.
If you get upset, make sure that you contradict or rebut the idea and not the person.
2. Avoid putting down the other person’s ideas and beliefs.
Instead of saying, “That is unacceptable!” try, “I do not agree and here is why…”
Avoid yelling, using sarcasm, and making insulting comments.
3. Use “I” statements to communicate: How you feel, what you think and what
you want or need.
Using “you” statement can be argumentative so instead of saying, “You always
remind me about my chores on Wednesdays when you know I have a lot of
homework” say, “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of homework tonight.
Can I do those chores tomorrow?”
4. Listen to the other point of view.
Focus on what is being said. Be a good listener and when it is your turn to speak,
repeat any key point the other person made to show you listened. Then calmly
present your case and why you disagree.
5. Stay calm.
Of course, it is a big challenge to stay calm, especially on a heated conversation.
Respect goes beyond difficult conversation. Being helpful and considerate can
establish the foundation when we might disagree.

C. ABSTRACTION (Exploring Restaurants)

The teacher will instruct the students to identify if the given statements by the diners
are agreement or disagreement

I think that that would be perfect! (A)

Yes, you are right. (A)
I'm afraid, I can't agree with you. (D)
This is in complete contradiction to what I’ve said. (D)
Good idea! We will have to get right on it. (A)
