A. Preparatory Activities

 Greetings
Good day Class!

Before we start, class kindly turn on your “Good morning, Ma’am”

cameras.

 Prayer (The learners will turn on their cameras)

Let us all start our day with a prayer. ______,

kindly lead the prayer.
(The learner will lead the prayer)

 Review
Before we proceed to our lesson for today,
let's have a quick review. Who can tell me
what the previous lesson was? Ma’am last time we tackled about types of speech
context.

Yes, that’s right! Thank you. and who would

like to enumerate the types of speech
context? Intrapersonal Communication
Interpersonal Communication
Public Communication

Excellent!

 Motivation

I’ll show some pictures and try to imagine

that you are given the chance to talk to them,
how will you talk to them? What will you tell
them?
(Students will answer)

 President Rodrigo Roa Duterte

 Friends
 Teacher

As we observed how we communicate may

largely depend on the context. If you were
given a chance to talk to Pres. Duterte, do you
think it is appropriate to crack jokes and use
slang words to him? Same with your teacher.

There are proper words for different times and

today we will learn those styles.

B. Presentation of the Lesson

How we communicate may largely depend on

the context. (Students answers may vary)

What does it mean of this?

Context is one of the natures of

communication. The environment or the
situation where communication occurs has
direct relation to speech styles.

According to Joos (1968), there are five

speech styles. These are (1) intimate, (2)
casual, (3) consultative (4) formal and (5)
frozen.

We will find out their meaning and how can

we apply them for different situations.

Intimate Intimate- This style is private, which occurs between

or among close family members or individuals. The
Kindly read it, ______. language used in this style may not be shared in
public

That’s correct!

Intimate style of speech means it is used

between two very close individuals. This style
is used in conversations between people who
are very close and know each other quite well.
Toward people who hold a special place in
our personal lives. (Students will answer)

Mostly who are they?

(Close friends, siblings, husband and wife,
parents and
children, and boyfriend and girlfriend)

Yes, correct!

Examples:
 Telling your bf/gf that you love them
 Asking your family for advice about serious
matters. Casual- This style is common among peers and
friends. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular are used.
Next speech style.

______, please read.

Also known as informal style, it is usually

used between, friends, or even insiders who
have things to share. This what you usually
use in your daily conversations.

Example of Jargon words:

 AWOL: Short for "absent without leave,"
AWOL is military jargon used to describe a
person whose whereabouts are unknown.
 Hard copy: A common term in business,
academia, and other fields, a "hard copy" is a
physical printout of a document.

 Example of Slang words:

 Dope - Cool or awesome.
 Lit - Amazing, cool, or exciting.
 OMG - An abbreviation for "Oh my gosh" or
"Oh my God"
 Basic - This is an adjective used to describe (Students answers may vary)
when something is typical or ordinary.

Aside from these examples, class can you

share your slang words.

Example of Casual Speech Style:

 Talking about NBA finals with your friends Consultative- This style is the standard one.
Professional or mutually acceptable language is a

Kindly read it, ______.

This is used in semi-formal communication;

sentences end to be shorter and spontaneous

Examples of situations are communication

between:
 teachers and students
 employers and employees
 doctors and patients
 judge and lawyer
 President and his constituents.

As you observed it happens in two-way

participation. There is a listener and feedback.

Formal- This style is used in formal settings. Unlike

Style.
the consultative style, this is one-way.
Anyone from the class? Kindly read it.

Yes ______.

Remember it is used in speaking to medium to

large groups. This style is used in formal
settings.
(Students answers may vary)
Think of all the formal events that you have
attended or saw in the news.

Give an example.

All of those require formal conversation.

Examples:
 Meetings
 Announcements
 Welcoming Adress
 SONA of the President
 Formal Speeches
Frozen - This style is “frozen” in time and remains
unchanged. It mostly occurs in ceremonies.
Let’s move on to the last type of speech style
which is the Frozen Speech Style.

Also known as fixed speech, it is the highest

form of communicative style which is often
used in respectful situations.

Common examples are the

 Preamble to the Constitution
 Lord’s Prayer
 Allegiance to country or flag
 Marriage Ceremonies

These are the speech styles that we have. We

cannot say that we are only limited to one
style for we have different contexts of
conversation in our daily living.

Ok class! Any questions and clarifications?

C. Generalization

It seems like you already understand our

speech style According to Joos (1968), there
