Element Project, Neon

We have all heard of Neon signs, we have seen them, and admired in awe at their beauty.
But did we ever stop to realize what was making those signs work? I do not think so. This is why
I will be showing what really happens when you see a neon sign or lasers for that matter.
This essay will discuss what Neon is and its chemical properties as well as discussing some of its
technological uses in our modern-day life.

First, lets look at the element itself. Neon is a gas, has an atomic number of 10 and is the second
element on the noble gases group, it belongs in group number 18. Neon is classified a non-metal
and is a gas at room temperature. Neon is in fact the 4th most abundant element in the universe,
placing behind oxygen.
However, there is only about O.0018% Neon found in the Earth’s atmosphere, Neon’s density is
about 0.9 g/L and it is the third least most dense element that we know of. Neon has a melting
point of 24.56 k (-248.59°C or -415.46'F) and a boiling point of 27.07 k (-246,08'C or -410.94'F).
