PART-2
CH-6 ‘CHANGES AROUND US
1. ‘Every change has a cause’. Name a few changes that are observed due to such causes.
Change in shape: an orange is squeezed to extract its juice.
Change in size: folding a paper multiple times, such as origami
Change in position: kicking a ball to strike a goal.
Change of colour: heating iron till it gets red hot.
Change of state: heating wax till it melts to liquid wax.
Change in the internal structure: new substances are formed, such as burning of
magnesium ribbon till it becomes a white powder.
2. Difference between a reversible change and an irreversible change.
Reversible change Irreversible change
A change in which we can obtain the A change in which we cannot obtain the
substance in its original form. substance in its original form.
Generally a reversible change retains the Generally an irreversible change does
internal structures of the molecules. not retain the internal structures of the
molecules. A new substance is formed.
3. Is tearing of paper a physical change? Give reason to justify your answer as you cannot
obtain the sheet that was torn.
While tearing the paper the shape and size only changes but not its internal structure. No
new substance is formed. The molecules of the paper remain the same. Hence it is a
physical change but irreversible.
4. Give similar example where a change is physical but irreversible.
Breaking of glass
Making dough from flour.
5. Heating a substance is a physical change. Comment on it.
Heating a substance necessarily is not a physical change.
For example water is heated to become its vapour but on cooling you get back water in its
liquid form.
On heating if the conditions that are most essential for a chemical reaction, only then a
new substance is formed.
Most chemical reactions need a certain amount of energy to start.
6. Give some examples where a change is chemical and irreversible.
Burning of a piece of paper produces new substances like smoke, carbon-dioxide and
water vapour.
Growth in animals or humans or plants: you can never get back to a baby stage when you
were in a cradle. The food that you eat is absorbed and helps your cells to grow.
Cooking of food changes the soft portion in an egg to a hard part while boiling it.
7. What is a chemical reaction?
In a chemical reaction, the initial substances react with each other to form new
substances. The original substances are known as reactants and the new substances
formed are known as products.
New substances are formed with entirely different molecular structure and generally
cannot be reversed.
8. Give an example of a chemical change that can be reversed.
Hydrogen and oxygen are combined to form water by passing electricity and the same
process can also lead to the breaking down of water molecule to hydrogen and oxygen.
This process is known as electrolysis.
9. Dissolving salt or sugar in water: is it a physical change?
Dissolving salt or sugar in water forms a solution where the sugar or salt particles
disappear and they remain in between the molecular spaces of a liquid.
We can get back the salt or sugar by evaporation or distillation of water.
Both the molecules of water and the solute such as salt and water remain the same.
Therefore it is a physical change.
10. Give two examples of a chemical reaction. Name the reactants and their products(HW)
11. Explain in burning of a candle both physical and chemical change occurring simultaneously.
We know that burning a substance is a chemical change that gives of heat and light
generally.
When a candle is burnt, it is not the solid wax or the liquid wax that burns.
It is actually the vapour of wax that is formed when a candle is burnt due to the immense
heat it first melts and creeps through the wick which is called as capillary action.
Later due to the immense heat it changes to its vapour.
Changing of states by heating is a physical change.
But when the wax vapour burns it becomes a chemical change.
Thus a physical change and a chemical change occur simultaneously when a candle is
burnt.
Ans When you kick a football, its position changes but it remains a football. No new substance
is formed .The molecules that make up the football remains the same. Such changes are called
physical changes.
Ans Tearing of paper is a physical change because the molecules of the paper remain the same.
Ans Most chemical reactions need a certain amount of energy to start. This is known as its
activation energy.
Ans
Ans Some chemical changes require the presence of another substance which itself does not
undergo any change. Such a substance is called a catalyst.
Ans When you light a candle. The heat of the flame melts the wax. This is a physical change of
wax. The liquid wax creeps up the wick. This is known as a capillary action.
Ans When an iron chain is kept in humid air for some days, a brown substance deposits on it.
This brown substance is called rust.
Ans A chemical change occurs when there is a chemical reaction between the substances.
Ans In a chemical reaction, the initial substances react with each other to form new substances.
Ans The new substances formed during or after a chemical reaction are known as products.
