Flood is the overflow of water in water resources such as pond, lakes and rivers.

It submerges what used


to be dry land and can swipe away human property in extreme cases. One of its main causes is heavy
rainfall, which is mostly caused by climate change and extreme weather. Flood is a natural disaster
which has one of the most environmental problems in Nepal, where more than 1000 people have fallen
victims to till date. The flood gets worse in the monsoon season, when the rain is heavy and falling
consistently. Some of the main causes of flood are:

1) Heavy rainfall
2) Melting of ice
3) Glacial lake outburst
4) Rising of sea levels due to climate change
5) Leakage of dams

Some effects of flood are:

1) impairment of human property


2) Loss of human lives
3) Economic growth hindrance
4) Damage of natural beauty
5) Negative psychological impact

The mitigation measures are:

1) Proper management of dams and water resources


2) Afforestation
3) Avoiding human settlement near water bodies
4) Reducing pollution and managing waste
5) Preparing first aid beforehand for lesser critical cases
6) Construction or expansion of drainage channels
7) Maintaining steep slopes with vegetation

How to deal with floods:

1) DONOT panic. Stay where you are and keep calm.


2) Stay In higher grounds where the water cannot reach.
3) Close all doors and windows of the building you’re staying in
4) Turn around and run immediately if you spot flooding.
5) Evacuate accordingly.

Flood is a very dangerous natural disaster that can sweep away property and thousands of human
lives. It is best to stay aware and on guard mainly during the monsoon season.
