MODULE 3

Assessment

1. Draw at least 5 analytical chemistry laboratory apparatus and label their parts and state their
function.

Reflection

1. If you are going to create laboratory equipments, what would it be? Explain your answer.

If i were to create a laboratory equipment, it would be a test tube. A simple equipment that is
used in every laboratory yet it is very useful. Test tube is widely used to hold and mix small
quantities of solid and liquid chemicals. I remember when we were in the hospital, the nurses
used test tube when they have to test a patient's blood. I choose test tube because it is
convenient to use especially that the COVID-19 virus is still existing all around the world. This
equipment might be used to test whether the patient or an individual is COVID-19 positive or
negative by getting small quantity of their blood. Not just in viruses but it can also be used in
testing different kinds of illnesses.

MODULE 4

Activity

1. What is the difference between an analysis, a determination and a measurement?

Analysis is a process that provides chemical or physical information about the constituents in
the sample or the sample itself.

Determination is an analysis of a sample to find the identity, concentration, or properties of the

analyte.

Measurement is an experimental determination of an analyte's chemical or physical properties.

Exercise

Wang and colleagues describe a fluorescence method for the analysis of Ag+ in water. When
analyzing a solution that contains 1.0×10−91.0×10−9 M Ag+ and 1.1×10−71.1×10−7 M Ni2+, the
fluorescence intensity (the signal) was +4.9% greater than that obtained for a sample
of 1.0×10−91.0×10−9 M Ag+. What is KAg,Ni for this analytical method?

Assessment

Barnett and colleagues developed a method to determine the concentration of codeine

(structure shown below) in poppy plants [Barnett, N. W.; Bowser, T. A.; Geraldi, R. D.; Smith,
B. Anal. Chim. Acta 1996, 318, 309– 317]. As part of their study they evaluated the effect of
several interferents. For example, the authors found that equimolar solutions of codeine and
the interferent 6-methoxycodeine gave signals, respectively of 40 and 6 (arbitrary units).
Reflection

How will knowing and familiarizing analytical chemistry vocabulary help you to understand this
subject easier and faster?

Familiarity with analytical chemistry vocabulary particularly in knowing its intruments lead to a
more precise and accurate results in every biological field of study. As a student, knowing and
being familiar with the vocabularies used in analytical chemistry will help us understand more
the subject because it allow us to compare and interpret data that is very significant for our
research or experiments.

MODULE 5

Reflection
How will this topic help you understand Analytical chemistry more?

Analytical method is used in biology for research, development, and quality control of chemical
products. It helps to established a good and stable results.

MODULE 6

Reflection

Why is this topic relevant to statistical analysis?

Significance testing is relevant to statistical analysis because it allows the researcher to provide
a fact and reliable findings that is not due to a chance only and it can be used to filter out
unpromising hypotheses.

MODULE 7

Reflection

Why is this topic important?

The topic is important because the standard solution is a crucial element as it provides a simple
but reliable means of determining concentrations and chemical species. As a science students,
the things I learned in this topic will be very useful in the future as it allows me to provide a
high degree of accuracy especially when I will be having experiments one day and in order to
have a fact and reliable results.

MODULE 8

Reflection
Why are acids and bases important in our life?

In our everyday life, we digest food that we eat and taking medicines which acids and bases
help to maintain a stable internal environment in our body. Let's say that cells secrete acid and
bases maintain the proper pH for the enzymes to work. Acids is also used in cleaning metals.
Both are essential for our life.

MODULE 9

Reflection

Why might a carefully designed analytical method give poor results?

Having poor results is an unavoidable circumstances in every experiment or study even the
most carefully used methods will often give poor results. There may be failure in the samples
that were collected. In other words, the researcher might have collected the wrong sample that
could lead to error and poor results.

MODULE 10

Reflection

Why is this method slowly becoming obsolete?

The method is becoming obsolete because a minor mistake in the procedure can often lead to
tragedy for the analysis. As a researcher, you should know what you are doing and what you
are about to do because even a singlen and minor misstep can lead to errors for the analysis.
