Essential Question: How can we help depression and mental illness?

Three Points to Prove: #1: Golf can improve a person’s mental health

#2: Golf can teach a person perseverance

#3: Golf can be used as a form of therapy

Point that this Source Proves: # Golf can teach a person perseverance

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove)

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call Life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad
shots, but you have to play from where it lies.”- Bobby Jones (famous golfer)

Overcoming hazards is the greatest opportunity for growth

“For me, it lied in a rough spot. I could have just picked up my ball and retire from the tournament. But I didn’t, I
finished and achieved my dream.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This Ted Talk video proved my point because this motivational speaker achieved her dream even though there
was a big obstacle in the way. This spokesperson persevered through her troubles. The spokesperson in this video is
named Silvana Mejia, a Columbian golfer who started when she was six years old. Her dad got her into golf because
his entire family were devoted golfers. She started at lower-level tournaments and then she started to get into high-
level tournaments. Her dream was to play in the national tournament. In order to do that she had to go through two
qualifiers, the local and regional qualifiers.
She got through both and got into the national tournament. She trained and trained doing everything she can to
prepare for the tournament. Two weeks before the tournament, Silvana was in the middle of a practice round when she
felt a sharp pain in her stomach and was quickly rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with appendicitis and
needed immediate surgery. Her doctors and teachers told her parents that she wouldn’t be able to play. Silvana ignored
them and still played the tournament. She grinded and played so well that she got 5 th place in the 13-14 division.
Everyone was astonished and didn’t believe that she would be able to do it. Silvana could have given up and retire
from the tournament, but instead she finished and completed her dream.
This quote that Bobby Jones says is a quote I think we call all relate to. “Golf is the closest game to the game
we call Life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play from
where it lies.” In life you can get very lucky and get the things you want while at the same time you can be delt a bad
hand. But no matter what you have to deal with what you have and push forward. Overcoming hazards in life and golf
is the best way to grow as a person.
