Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet due to their role in absorbing
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and in turn releasing oxygen. Carbon dioxide is
one of the gases that causes the greenhouse effect or global warming. Instead,
oxygen is a primordial gas for the life of animals, plants and many other organisms.
Rain forests also help stabilize the global climate, producing rainfall around the
planet.
The tropical jungles:
• Help stabilize the world's climate
• They maintain the water cycle
• Protect against floods, drought and erosion
• They have human populations in many regions
• They provide a home for many plants and animals
• They support groups of native people
• They are unique places to visit and discover.
The forests are made up of numerous plant species and the climatic conditions that
exist in them allow other organisms such as fungi, lichens and animals to establish
themselves. In these forests there are clear and shadow areas, wetter areas and
drier ones, etc. that become the habitat of many species. In addition, there are
species that have become accustomed to living in trees, on the ground, on the same
trees that make up forests and jungles (epiphytic plants such as bromeliads) and, in
many cases, organisms have established mutualistic relationships with others. On
the other hand, forests are at the origin of streams, rivers and other aquatic
ecosystems that provide new habitats for other forms of life.
