Welcome to Braeburn School
Bringing out the best in our children and providing them with opportunities and an environment in
which to flourish are our constant aims. These are achieved in a range of ways, including
developing and nurturing a successful blend of creativity, confidence and courtesy, which will
equip our young people to cope with the demands of life in the 21st century, wherever in the
world they may live. We encourage all our pupils to fully develop their individual talents and
attributes whilst at Braeburn and to aspire to excellence in all they undertake, whether it be in
the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage or in any aspect of extra-curricular activities
which we offer.
We strongly believe in a holistic approach to learning where an equal emphasis and weighting is
placed on academics, sports, music, the arts and drama, and on personal growth and
development. A multi-cultural and diverse community of around 70 nationalities are represented
in the 650 strong pupil body. Over 60 graduate teachers deliver the curriculum which follows the
National Curriculum of England and Wales but is enriched and adapted to reflect and be relevant
to our pupil body.
School Rules
We believe in positive reinforcement; our students are also
awarded a variety of incentives for exceeding our expectations.
We work together to be role models which abide by the following
BIG 5:
• Follow instructions
• Be honest
• Do your best
• Be kind
• Be responsible
School Day
All children are expected to be at school for 8am when the bell goes, with supervision by teaching
staff beginning from 7:45am. At the end of the school day, all children will return to their form
class at 3.20pm where they will be registered by their class or form teacher. Parents, or a
designated adult they have informed school of, collect their children from their classrooms.
Older siblings in our High School can also collect pupils if their parents have given written
permission to the school to do so. Bus children are sent to the buses and the class teacher is
responsible for the rest of their class until 3:45pm. From this time, Year 1 - 6 children make their
way to the Primary library, with Year 7-8 pupils going to the 7B classroom, where they will either
do their homework or read quietly under the supervision of the librarian/duty teacher until
4:45pm. After this they will be accompanied to the bus collection point in the Primary dining
room to be collected by parents.
Communication and Home School Diaries
Each pupil in Years 3-8 receives a diary at the beginning of the year, it is key to communication
between parents and teachers, and also allows the children to take more responsibility of
managing their own time efficiently. Pupils in Early years and Key Stage 1 do not have diaries but
have Seesaw accounts.

Please note the following:

• As appropriate, children will record the homework set for each subject and when it is due in.
If pupils are unable to complete their homework, parents are asked to note this in the diary.
• All important school events and dates will be recorded in your child's school diary.
• The school diary is key for communicating with your child’s teachers, you may wish to ask a
question, bring our attention to something of importance or make a comment about a piece
of work.
• Please ensure that a signed note is sent in for the games and swimming staff if your child is
unable to take part in either of these activities for a medical reason.
We actively encourage you to share any concerns or worries that you may have as soon as
possible. You can do this either by scheduling a meeting with your child's class teacher or relevant
member of staff, through a note in your child’s diary or by phoning the school office.

Curriculum Information
Within the first weeks of each term, the Year Leaders will
send you a letter and overview of the term for the children
and parents in their year group. This letter explains the
main events of the term for the year group and
what topics or areas will be covered in each subject area.
In addition, the Year Leaders send out a newsletter via email at the
beginning of each week called, ‘Peek at the Week’. This informs parents of the main teaching
focus for each subject as well as any special events or days that are occurring during the week
ahead.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Braeburn provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities to all its pupils. We encourage all
children to participate in a lunch or after school activity, to broaden and strengthen both their
skills academically and socially. Information regarding the selection of activities is shared with
parents and pupils early each term - in the second week of the first term and the first week of the
second and third terms. The school office keeps a list of all the children staying for after-school
clubs on any day. All after school clubs begin at 3:45pm and finish at 4:45pm. Parents can collect
their children form the after-school club location. The teacher will then accompany any children
waiting to be collected or going on the late bus to the bus collection point by the top car park.

Equipment
For your child to make the most of their education please encourage your child to be organised and
equipped for every lesson throughout their school day. This includes:
• A Braeburn sun hat and a water bottle (every day)
• PE/games/swimming kit on the required days
• Basic stationery in a named pencil case (geometry set, a scientific calculator and a dictionary
as required – Year Leaders will inform parents if their children require these)

Homework
Homework is a valued part of your child’s education. Homework should be done to the standard
of the class work and will form an important role in consolidating the work taught. Please
encourage your child to work as independently as they can as it gives the teacher an insight into
your child's understanding, either prior to or after the subject content has been taught. The
homework set slightly varies depending on your child’s age, please see your child’s diary. Please
note that all homework will be set on the first lesson of the week for that subject. and will be
due in on the Friday of the same week or as indicated in your child's diary.

Reporting Progress
There are regular opportunities for you to meet your child’s class teacher. In the week before
the half-term break there are opportunities for you to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss
progress and next steps. Towards the end of each term, a written report is issued.

Friends At Braeburn (FAB)

We encourage you to get involved with FAB, our parents’ association. FAB’s focus is on community –
the school’s and the wider community in Lavington, Kawangware and beyond. FAB organises, runs
and coordinates events and projects that bring the Braeburn community together and that support
children, children’s organisations and families in the locale. Please contact the school office for
further information.Questions or Concerns
We operate an open door policy where parents are welcome to come in with any queries they
may have. Your child’s class teacher is the appropriate person in the first instance, then to the Year
Leader if further discussion or action is needed. Appointments to see the Assistant Headteacher
can be made via the Primary School office or via e-mail. Should you wish to the speak to the
Headteacher, please liaise with Teresa Mudengani in the Primary School office.
