Steel Design Quiz # 1 – Final

1. A W300x74, A-50 steel is used as a column with unsupported length of 7m. The
columns at A, B, and C are rigidly attached to the footing base. The column has an
intermediate brace (assume hinge connection) in the weak direction as shown,
consider column at B, calculate the factored uniform distributed load (Wu) that the
beam can carry using LRFD Method. Use the recommended value of K.

W 300x74 Properties:
A = 9420 mm bf = 205 mm tw = 9.4 mm
rx = 132 mm d = 310 mm
ry = 49.8 mm tf = 16.3 mm

Solution:

 Check if the section is compact

 Unstiffened Element

b=0.5 bf =102.5 mm ; t=t f =16.3mm

h 102.5
=
t 16.3
=6.288<0.56

∴ non slender
