OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

I plan to study the social media company Twitter for my case study. Twitter is a
social platform that was created and launched by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, and Evan
Williams in 2006. This platform is commonly used by celebrities and common people to
post statements about relative topics or current events. Twitter has undergone a series of
changes over the years to include leadership changes. In 2022, Twitter was purchased for
46.5 billion dollars by Elon Musk.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

My role within the company will be the Human Resources Manager. Since there
has been recent turmoil within the company regarding policy and role changes, I felt it
was appropriate to probe what the root issues are within the staff. The Human Resources
Manager will be at the forefront of staff changes and determining the morale of the
remaining employees while advising the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) on how to fill
empty roles. As the Human Resources Manager, I am ultimately responsible for
enforcing the company’s culture for all departments. This role is internal to the
organization and will be located at the headquarters building in San Francisco, California.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).

In 2022, Elon Musk purchased Twitter because he wants to take on the challenge
of transforming the culture of censorship. Previously, some high-profile celebrities were
blocked from Twitter when they posted something that was questionable or controversial.
The issue with this is whether protected speech be allowed on social platforms or not.

1
There are some speech that is clearly illegal such as hate speech, but there is an
abundance of speech that falls in the “gray area”. With the change of leadership comes
other challenges such as layoffs, firings and other organizational issues. I will explore
what changes have been made in staffing and other key positions and how that has
impacted the plans for strategy changes.
