Topic: Great Circle sailing

Learning Outcome: LO 3.2 Great circle Sailing problem solving
Solve
1. Your ship departs Yokohama, Japan from position Lat. 35° 27’ N Long.139° 39’ E bound for San
Francisco, California, USA. At position Lat. 37° 48.5’ N, Long. 122° 24’ W. Determine the distance by
Great circle sailing.
Solution:

Lat1 = 35°27' N Long1= 139°39' E = 180- 139°39' = 40.35

Lat2 = 37°48.5' N Long2= 122°24' W = 180- 122°24' = 57.6

Dlat = 73° 15' N Dlo= 098° E 97.95 E

Cos GCD = (cos L1 x cos L2 x cos DLO)+(sin L1 x sin L2)

= cos (35°27') x cos ( 37° 48.5' ) x cos ( 098° ) + sin ( 35°27') x sin ( 37°48.5' ) = shift cos x 60
GCD°= 74.58 °
GCD =_4,474.5 nm

Sine IC=(cos L2 x sin DLO) ÷ sin GCD°

= cos ( 37° 48' ) x sin ( 098° ) ÷ sin ( 74.58 )

IC = N 54.3 E
True IC= 54.3 T

Sine FC=(cos L1 x sin DLO) ÷ sin GCD°

= cos ( 35°27' ) x sin ( 098° ) ÷ sin ( 74.58 )

FC= 56.8
True FC= 56. 8 T
