EVENT NAME: MechTRIX, IOE Pulchowk Campus, Lalitpur, Poush 26,27,28

SUB-EVENT NAME: GO-KART RACING

Go-kart racing is a national level 4 or 3 wheeler racing event where participants bring out
their best, innovative-working go-kart to race with their opponents. Racing was done on a
track i.e. the road inside the campus building and it was nearly 500 metres in length.

INTRODUCTION
This documentation provides an overview of the electric Go-kart project, including its
purpose, components, how to build it and difficulties and remedies.

PURPOSE
The aim of this Go-kart project was to construct an enjoyable and practical vehicle suitable
for racing event hosted at IOE, Pulchowk, as well as showcasing it at any upcoming events
on campus. The vehicle was designed with affordability, ease of construction, and safety for
drivers of all ages in mind. In addition to recreational and racing applications, we plan to
employ this project to expand our students' expertise and outlook in this area.
COMPONENTS
The following components were necessary for the Go-kart project:
● Chassis: The chassis is the foundation of the Go-kart and it was made by welding
metal pieces with the accurate measurement as needed.
● Engine: The engine is responsible for powering the Go-kart and as our Go-kart was
electric, we used a 2000W hub motor for this purpose.
● Battery: Batteries are responsible for powering the motor which in result powers the
whole Go-kart.
● Wheels and Tires: The wheels and tires are what provide traction and allow the
Go-kart to move. Our Go-kart was 3-wheeler (2*front, 1*back) and as the hub motor
is attached inside the wheels, it was more clean as compared.
● Brakes: The brakes are essential for safety and help to slow or stop the Go-kart.
● Steering System: The steering system allows the driver to control the direction of the
Go-kart.
● Seat: The seat provides a comfortable and secure place for the driver to sit while
operating the Go-kart.
● Safety Equipment: Safety equipment, such as helmets and seat belts, is essential for
protecting the driver in case of an accident.

BUILDING THE GO-KART

To build the Go-kart, the following steps were followed:
1. Choose a design: A design was decided on that fit the needs and budget. Then the
design was implemented accordingly.
2. Gather materials: Once a design was chosen, all the necessary materials, including the
chassis metals, motor, wheels and tires, brakes, steering system, seat, and safety
equipment, were gathered.
3. Build the chassis: The chassis was constructed according to the chosen design using
metal provided.
4. Install the motor and batteries: The electric hub motor was fitted at the back of the
chassis as it was the driving wheel and 6*batteries of 12V were placed on the battery
frame according to the design.
5. Add the wheels and tires: The wheels and tires were installed on the frame, making
sure they were properly aligned and balanced.
6. Install the brakes: The brakes were installed on the frame, making sure they were
properly adjusted and functioning.
7. Install the steering system: The steering system was installed on the frame, making
sure it was properly aligned and functioning.
8. Add the seat: The seat was installed on the frame, making sure it was securely
fastened.
9. Install safety equipment: Safety equipment, such as helmets and seat belts, was
installed to ensure the driver was protected in case of an accident.
10. Circuit connection and management: The wires coming from the hub motor were
connected to the motor controller accordingly. Connecting the hub motor to the
controller was more complex than we expected, but good research and knowledge
among the team proved to be superior.
11. Test and adjust: The Go-kart was tested to make sure it was functioning properly. The
brakes, steering, and other components were adjusted as necessary.

DIFFICULTIES & REMEDIES

This project taught the team members many things; mainly because of the difficulties we
faced during the procedure. First and foremost, welding was a problem but we managed to
learn within the time limit and did all the wielding ourselves.. Secondly, the timing was a
problem for us; as the members are from different faculties and all of us couldn’t arrive at a
certain time to continue our project. But then we solved this problem by working during the
night time as the members were free during that time. We worked till 1-2 am in the morning
some days. Lastly, we faced a major problem in the motor connection as it was more
advanced. We had worked before with a different controller but this time we worked with a
more advanced controller which made our brain busier than ever. With sheer dedication and
deep research on the new controller we finally overcame that problem too.
And finally the Go-kart was ready to roar !

CONCLUSION
The Go-kart project is a fun and challenging project that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
By following these steps, you can build your own Go-kart and enjoy the thrill of racing or
just cruising around in your backyard. Remember to always wear safety equipment and
practise safe driving habits.
