Module: 6th Sem Final Project

Project Name: Film Sound Production Project

Guidelines for your project:

● Your video/movie has to be approved by the faculty before you initiate your project.
● Your video/ movie clip should be apt to 7.1 Surround Sound Imaging ideal for placing
surround elements like Dialogue, Sound Effects and Score.
● Duration of the movie has to be between 5-10 min.
● Maximum Studio Time allotted is 24 hours.

Scenario 
 
You have been commissioned by a production house to record On-Location Sound for a Film.
You will oversee this project from its inception to its Final Mix in Pro Tools 12 and delivery.
Your responsibilities include:

● Managing the Production files, Location recording equipment efficiently.  


● Maintaining Studio Log which includes all information about your Recordings, Mix and
Edit History /Parameters.
● Taking charge of the Editing and Mix of the session.
● Effective use of Media Lab, Analog Studio and Avid Studio.
● Final Mixdown of your Project.

Task 1: The Concept and Production (10 marks)

● Shoot a short film of a maximum duration of 5 min


● Capture the audio of your short film using different ON-Location Microphones and
Recorders.
● Draft a report on equipment that will be used for the shoot, explaining the Miking
Techniques and the equipment used during the Post Production.
● Maintaining a log of ‘take’ folder and ‘clip ID’ from the recorder of your final shots and
recordings.
● This log can be maintained/ charted according to the scene of your film.
● Exporting Final Trim of your Video.
Task 2: Session Management and Editing [5 Marks]
 
● You will be using Pro Tools 12 only for this project.
● Creating a Pro Tools session importing all your recorded files with the movie file. Do a
basic editing and cleanup of audio. Make sure you have proper sync of audio with the
video.
● Please save your session in External hard drive. Keep a backup. DO NOT save on the
desktop or it will be deleted without prior intimation.
● Name and save your session in the folder marked for your batch in the following
format: B.Sc. 601SP Mix Folder -> [Name and Roll No.]–> [Project Title]-> Session.
● Your session should have respective Auxes, Sub Masters and Master Faders.
● Make use of VCA Master Tracks.
● Labelling your tracks and colour code them accordingly.
● Always keep a Backup.

Task 3: Sound Effects and Design [10 Marks]

● Recording Live Sound Effects are compulsory.


● Use of minimal sound effects from your sound library for support.
● Categorise and arrange your sound effects in your session as Footstep, Live, Line and
Ambience.
● Use of separate Auxes (Submaster) for FS, Live, Line and Ambience.
● Process the sounds to match the visuals.
● Assigning EQ, Dynamics, Reverb and Delay to your sound effects.

Task 4: Mixdown [15 Marks]

● Save your Project as B.Sc. 601 SP_[Name of the Project]_Final Stereo Mix.
● Your mixdown should be in Stereo Format.
● Make Volume and Clip Gain level adjustments.
● Use Volume and Plugin Automation smartly. 
● Use EQ and Dynamic processing effectively. 
● Assigning Surround Reverb and Delay effects to enhance your Creative Production.
● Use only built in plugins of Pro Tools or Avid Focusrite Bundle.
● Create a print audio track to record your Mix Down called ‘Mix Out’.
● Record your Mixdown into ‘Mix Out’ Audio Track.
● Export stems of all tracks in Stereo.

Task 5: Delivery and Submission [5 Marks]


 
● Export – Audio Mixdown as Stereo (Interleaved) in .wav format.
● Deliver the mp3 bounce file (For Inpods Submission).
● DVD containing your Pro Tools 12 Session with Audio & Video Files.
● Your Project title would be BSC601SP_ [Roll no.] _[Name]
● Stereo (Interleaved) in .wav Format.
● Hardcopy of Live Logbook of 1000 words containing your Channel Information, Track
information and Plugin Settings.
o The word count should be clearly mentioned on the cover page. Including
student name, reg. no. etc.…
o The word count does not include the following:
▪ Cover page
▪ Table of contents
▪ Acknowledgements
▪ References

Notes:
1. Make sure the project work is presentable as this can be used in your Protfolio.
2. Project work starts on: 24th January, 2022
3. Extension of submission dates shall not be entertained under any circumstances
4. The Preproduction pitch will be conducted from 7th- 10th Feb as per batches
5. Mandatory to attend both reviews to complete the Project.

Deliverables: Respective Audio/Video Files to be Submitted. Project File should be shared


upon request as a Compressed Zip File.
Grading criteria:

Tasks Completion 80%


Timely Delivery 20%
