Start the Before Start Procedure when ready to close the aircraft doors.
ELECTRICAL panel ............................................................................................................Set
APU selector (as needed) ......................................................................START, then ON
Verify that the FAULT light is extinguished.
When the APU RUNNING memo message shows:
Verify that the SECONDARY EXT PWR switch ON light is extinguished.
If the PRIMARY EXT PWR switch ON is illuminated:
PRIMARY EXT PWR switch ......................................................................... Push
Verify that the ON light is extinguished.
Flight deck door ......................................................................................... Closed and locked
Verify that the LOCK FAIL light is extinguished.
Flight deck windows .................................................................................. Closed and locked Flight deck windows ................................................................................... Closed and locked
Verify that the WINDOW NOT CLOSED decal does not show. Verify that the WINDOW NOT CLOSED decal does not show.
Verify that the orange indicator does not show. Verify that the orange indicator does not show.
MCP .................................................................................................................................... Set
IAS/MACH selector................................................................................................. Set V2
LNAV ........................................................................................................Arm, as needed
Verify the selections.
VNAV .......................................................................................................................... Arm
HDG/TRK selector ................................................................... Set initial heading or track
ALTITUDE selector................................................................................. Set initial altitude
CDU display ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Set
The Pilot Flying selects the TAKEOFF REF page or VNAV CLB page.
The Pilot Monitoring selects the LEGS page.
Exterior doors ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Verify closed
Establish communications with the ground personnel:
Verify the external checks are complete.
If pushback is needed:
Confirm the nose gear steering is locked out.
Verify ground equipment is ready for pushback.
Obtain clearance to pressurize the hydraulic system.

HYDRAULIC panel .............................................................................................................Set

WARNING: If the tow bar is connected, do not pressurize the hydraulic systems until
the nose gear steering is locked out. Unwanted tow bar movement can occur.
Note: Pressurize the right system first to prevent fluid transfer between systems.
R ELEC DEMAND pump selector ........................................................................... AUTO
Verify that FAULT light is extinguished prior to selecting remaining hydraulic pumps
to ensure brake system is correctly configured.
C1 and C2 ELEC PRIMARY pump switches ................................................................ON
Verify that the Center 1 FAULT light is extinguished.
The Center 2 FAULT light may stay illuminated until after engine start because of
load shedding.
L ELEC DEMAND pump selector ............................................................................ AUTO
Verify that the FAULT light is extinguished.
C1 and C2 AIR DEMAND pump selectors .............................................................. AUTO
Verify that the FAULT lights are extinguished.
PASS SIGNS panel ............................................................................................................Set
NO ELECTRONICS selector ........................................................................................ON
SEAT BELTS selector ..................................................................................................ON
Verify the memo PASS SIGNS ON message is shown.
Fuel panel ...........................................................................................................................Set
L and R FUEL PUMPS switches ..................................................................................ON
Trim ..................................................................................................................................... Set Verify that the PRESS lights are extinguished.
Stabilizer trim:
Set the trim for takeoff. If the FUEL IN CENTER message shows:
Verify that the trim is in the green band. CENTER FUEL PUMPS switches ..........................................................................ON
Aileron trim: One or both PRESS lights may stay illuminated until after the engine start
Verify the trim is 0 units. because of load shedding.
Rudder trim:
Verify the trim is 0 units. BEACON light switch ..........................................................................................................ON
If any EICAS caution or advisory message(s) is shown:
CANC/RCL switch ..................................................................................................... Push
Verify all caution or advisory message(s) disappears. Press the button as many
times as necessary.
CANC/RCL switch ........................................................................................................... Push
Verify the RECALL indication shows and announce “RECALL”.
Announce the EICAS message(s).

Verify that only the expected alert messages are shown and call “CANCEL EICAS”.
Note: Expected messages are ENGINE SHUTDOWN and TCAS OFF.

CAUTION: Any inoperative system related message(s) must be discussed.

WARNING: Any unexpected message(s) must be resolved.

CANC/RCL switch ........................................................................................................... Push

Verify that the messages cancel.
Transponder Mode Selector ....................................................................................... XPNDR
Call for the “BEFORE START CHECKLIST”.
Do the BEFORE START CHECKLIST.
