Anticipatory Set/ Interest Approach/ Engagement:
Good morning! I hope all of you are having a good day today. I was thinking today about how we have been
talking a lot about horses and I have a story for you all. When I was younger, I had the ability to go to my
grandmas and ride my own horse. What happened though is I was too confident in myself, and I saddled up
my horse and tried to ride her without a helmet unsupervised. Unsafe right? Well, I ended up being air
flighted to US Davis Medical Hospital and had to get stitches and I dislocated my shoulder. So, when you
guys are out doing activities make sure you are confident but safe with what you are doing. Another thing
with horses is that they are an animal that can be artificially inseminated which is what we will be talking
about today!
● CFU / Activity:
How is artificial insemination different from natural service?
Why are some species artificially inseminated more than others?
What new development allows for infinite storage of semen?
Assembling the artificial insemination gun.
Directing classmates who are assembling the artificial insemination gun.
● Contextual Bridge: The purpose of artificial insemination is to improve the animals welfare and to
increase the success of fertilization.

Lesson Sequence
Anticipatory Set/ Interest Approach/ Engagement:
Good morning! Written on the board is your warm up question “Are all animals artificially inseminated the
same way? Why or why not?” you have five minutes to think and discuss with your table partner. Have
your notes out to write down what you think of. I have something really cool to show you all! I went and
picked up a semen tank to show you all how semen is stored like we talked about yesterday!
Stated Objective(s) – (written for students):
Today we will be rotating through stations in the shop that include preparing and setting up an AI gun and
practicing artificially inseminating a female bovine.
Statement of Purpose/Relevance:
This activity is important to give you a visual and hands on experience of how artificial insemination
works.
Objective #1: Given written instructions at two activity stations students will apply their knowledge of
setting up an artificial insemination gun to practice manually breeding a female bovine with 100%
accuracy.
● Contextual Set: This activity connects learning about the female reproductive tract and learning
about artificial insemination as you need to know where the parts of the female reproductive tract are
located in order to properly artificially inseminate a female bovine.
Content Outline (Teacher Says) Methods (Teacher Does)
● Explain the canister and canes ● Show students semen tank and how to properly
● Draw on the board the tank and identify the cap, pull up the canister and draw on the board
cork, canister, canes, and liquid nitrogen
● Explain the stations that are set up in the shop ● Writes activity steps on the board
a) There are detailed instructions at each
station for you to read and follow
b) Do not change stations until I say to change
stations
c) You will start at the station that has the
same number as your group that I number
you off to.
d) If you are confused at a station, ask a group
member first and if they do not know go
ahead and raise your hand
e) You will need to keep your task card with
you as it will be stamped after you complete
each task.
f) Now I will number you off into your groups ● Walk around while students are completing
activities and stamp cards.
● CFU / Activity:
Breeding station activities
What should you do once you get to a station?
What do you need stamped?
Who should you ask for help first?
● Contextual Bridge: Now that you have practiced how breeding would work, I want you to talk to your
table partner about what you found interesting and something you found difficult. We will discuss
these questions after a few minutes.

Parturition 10 of 16 9-12
Lesson Description:
Students are going to complete a gallery walk to introduce them to dystocia which leads us
into our discussion of the process of parturition and the difficulties involving birth.
Standards Addressed (specify):
● CTE: D4.3 Explain the parturition process, including the identification of potential problems and their
solutions
● CDE: A.1 Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative discussions on a
range of social and academic topics. B.5 Listening actively to spoken English in a range of social and
academic contexts. C10 Selecting and applying varied and precise vocabulary and other language
resources to effectively convey ideas. C12 Writing literary and informational texts to present,
describe, and explain ideas and information, using appropriate technology
Specific Instructional Objective(s) – (All components):
1. Given a presentation on parturition and dystocia, students will be able to describe
one abnormal birthing position, how that position can be assisted, how to assemble
an artificial insemination gun, and the process of breeding by completing the
breeding and dystocia assignment with 90% accuracy.

Lesson Sequence
Anticipatory Set/ Interest Approach/ Engagement:
Good morning! When you get seated take out your notes to write down your warmup and discuss it with
your table partner. Warm up: Once you have artificially inseminated an animal what are some ways to
detect pregnancy? Now you all are going to go outside for a gallery walk where I have six photos of
babies that are not in the correct birthing position. In your notes write down what you think is wrong with
the baby’s position, you will have ten minutes.
Stated Objective(s) – (written for students):
Today we are going to discuss the parturition process and some of the difficulties that can happen with
that process.
Statement of Purpose/Relevance:
For the past two days you have learned the importance of breeding an animal and how the process
works, so today is important because parturition is the end result after breeding that animal.
Objective #1: Given a presentation on parturition and dystocia, students will be able to describe one
abnormal birthing position and how that position can be assisted by completing the breeding and dystocia
assessment with 90% accuracy.
● Contextual Set: To learn more about the production of animals you will today be discussing the
birthing process and then connecting it back to the breeding process.
Content Outline (Teacher Says) Methods (Teacher Does)
● Go over the objective and purpose ● Open power point about parturition
- Explain key terms
- The three stages of parturition
- Describe dystocia and the different
causes
- Show parturition videos

assisted
● CFU / Activity:
-for each abnormal fetal position as what is wrong with the fetus’s position
- What are some causes of dystocia?
-How can we help an animal with dystocia?
-Dystocia gallery walk
-how many pictures do you need to identify the fetus abnormality?
-how long do you have to look at the pictures?
● Contextual Bridge: You will have the rest of the period to work on your assignment and tomorrow as
well. This assignment is due on February 2nd. If you have any questions about the assignment, ask at
any time or even email me is preferred.
Begin working on breeding and dystocia assignment and take photos in the shop with yesterday’s activity
materials.
Review, Summary, & Closure:
What are some abnormal birthing positions you have chosen to draw and describe? You should have
completed one portion of your assignment today, so come prepared tomorrow to work on it again. Have a
great day!
