What is Didactic?
Didactics is a discipline that is essentially concerned with the science of teaching and instruction
for any given field of study, didactics is teacher-centered and based on the sum of theoretical
knowledge and practical experience. Therefore, “didactics” is a more generalized term referring to
the theory and practical applications behind the science of instruction.
The Meaning of Didactics
What is the meaning of didactics? As mentioned earlier, “didactics” refers to the science of
teaching (in relation to aims, subject matter, methods, and frameworks) within a specific field.
Didactics is based on multiple theories of teaching, and in a wider sense, theory and the practical
application of teaching and learning methods.
Why is it important the Didactics?
Didactics is an important domain of knowledge to teacher formation and practice concerning the
relations established to teach and learn. Didactics knowledge, which is oriented to teaching and,
therefore, learning, goes beyond the simplifying comprehension of teaching methods and
techniques.
What is Didactics of Mathematics?
This is a field of research that aims at studying the theory and methods of learning the discipline.
The didactics of mathematics is a young scientific discipline that is dedicated to identifying and
explaining phenomena, and trying to solve problems, both related to the teaching and learning of
mathematics; These problems and phenomena can manifest themselves inside and outside the
school.
What is a main difference between the Singapore Lesson and the American lesson?
Learn by solving real problems. Learn math by playing. Children should learn the fundamentals of
math, science, and reading well. Using knowledge in science and math to solve real problems is
exactly the kind of skills they are trying to measure in Singapore.
Traditional methods usually focus on learning from memory, following procedures that we do not
understand, and doing a lot of calculations.
What do you think of Didactics of Mathematics?
I think that it is relevant when the intention arises to transform the relationship between the
learning-teaching process of Mathematics and, in particular, to go in search of the solution of
typical learning problems in contexts of secondary and higher education. This intention generates
the implementation of several didactic approaches linked to the study of Didactics in Mathematics,
proposed by different scholars.
