PATTERNS IN

MATHEMATICS
In Mathematics,
pattern is defined as
a sequence of
repeating objects,
shapes or numbers.
Every pattern has a
specific rule which it
follows.
Patterns can be finite and infinite.

FINITE PATTERN
-is a finite sequence in which we know
the first term and the last term

INFINITE PATTERN
-is a sequence in which we know the first
term but we don’t know the last term
RULES OF PATTERN
For creating a complete pattern, a certain set of rules
need to be considered. For applying these rules, we
should first understand the nature of the sequence
and the difference between the two consecutive
numbers given in the pattern. Some amount of
guesswork is required and then we check to see
whether the rule works throughout the whole pattern.
RULES OF PATTERN
1. REPEATING PATTERN
The type of pattern in which the rule keeps repeating over and over is
called a repeating pattern. It is generally common in letter and shape.

AABBAABB
2. GROWING PATTERN
The numbers are placed in the increasing form or each number is greater than the previous
number, then the pattern is known as a growing pattern. Example: 44, 50, 56, 62, …

3. SHRINKING PATTERN
The numbers are placed in the decreasing form or each number is smaller than the previous
number. Example: 40, 35, 30, 25 …
TYPES OF PATTERN
1. WORD PATTERN
2. GEOMETRIC PATTERN
3. LOGIC PATTERN
4. NUMBER PATTERN
WORD PATTERN
focused on th morphological rules in pluralizing nouns, conjugating
verbs for tense, and metrical rules of poetry

examples:
baby : babies buy : bought
trolly : trollies bring : brought
ally : ? catch : ?

answer : allies answer : caught

GEOMETRIC PATTERN
designs that depict geometric shapes like lines, circles and polygons
are observed in nature
are also associated to the identification of a particular country and culture
LOGIC PATTERN
is the ability to discover meaningful patterns in strange and
unpredictable situations.
usually seen on aptitute test

Answer: A
Solution: The arrows change direction from pointing up, to down, to right, then to left
with each turn. Circles increase by one with each turn.
In the fifth box the arrow is pointing up and there are five circles, so the next box must
have the arrow pointing down, and have six circles.
NUMBER PATTERN
The most common type of pattern in mathematics is the number pattern, where a
list of numbers follows a certain sequence based on a rule.
There are different types of number patterns:
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
also known as the algebraic pattern
the sequence are based on the addition or subtraction of terms. if two or more
terms in the sequence are given, we can use addition or subtraction to find the
arithmetic pattern

example:
54, 62, 70, ____
78 , 86, 94, _____
102

99, 90, 81, 72, ____

63 , _____
54
GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
a sequence of numbers that are based on multiplication and division

examples:
7, 35, 175, ____
875 , 4375,21,875
______

96, ____
48 , 24, 12, 6, ____

FIBONACCI SEQUENCE
named after Leonardo Fibonacci in 1202
are nature's numbering system
spirals arise from a property of growh called self-
similarity or scaling - the tendecy to grow in size but to
maintain the same shape. not all organims grow in this
self-similar manner.
a sequence of numbers in which each number in the
sequence is obtained by adding the two previous
number togrther. This sequence starts with 0 to 1.
HARMONIC SEQUENCE
a harmonic progression is a sequence of real numbers formed by
taking the reciprocals of an arithmetic sequence

example:
arithmetic
sequence
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6...
harmonic sequence
1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6...
TRIANGULAR NUMBER SEQUENCE
The representation of the numbrs in the form of an equilateral triangle
in a series or sequence is known as a triagular number pattern.
The numbers in the triagular pattern are in a sequence of 1, 3, 6, 10, 15,
21, 28, 36, 45 and so on.
The numbers in th triangular pattern are represented by dots.

SQUARE NUMBER SEQUENCE
In the square number pattern, each number is a square of consecutive
natural numbers.
The pattern is written as :

Also, the pattern can be

1 + 3 = 4 + 5 = 9 + 7 = 16 + 9 = 25 and so on.
Basically, we add consecutive odd numbers in the sequence.
CUBE NUMBER SEQUENCE
In a cube number pattern, each number is the cube of consecutive natural
numbers
The pattern is written as :
