Learning Competeny/ies: -Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance and displacement. Code:
S7FE - IIIa – 1
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide)
Key Concepts/ Understandings to The learners are able to understand and determine the reference frame and motion of object in terms of distance and
be Developed displacement.

3. Learning Resources Science Grade7 K-12 Learner’s Guide, Internet resources, Textbook: Grade7 Learners
Material.
4. Procedures
4.1 Introductory Activity Prayer.
5 minutes Checking of attendance (Optional).
Ask the students regarding their travel or vacation experiences and relate it to motion.
Presentation of lessons objectives.
4.2 Activity Demonstration of an object if it is reference frame and moving or at rest and examples of distance and displacement. Allow
10 minutes students to identify the distance and displacement,
4.3 Analysis What is the difference between at rest and in motion?
10 minutes What are the examples of reference frame?
What is distance?
What is displacement?
How do we determine distance and displacement?
How do you compute for final displacement?
Introduce the Pythagorean Theorem: a 2+ b2=c 2
4.4 Abstraction The distance an object moves is the total length of path travelled from its initial position to its final position. It refers to how
15 minutes much ground the object has covered during its motion. The description of an object’s motion often includes more than just the
distance it covers. If the distance between the car and the tree is 30 meters, then the distance travelled by the car is 30 meters.
But imagine that the car moved back to its initial position from the tree. This time, the car has travelled a total distance of 60
meters but the car ended up in its same starting point. Even though the car has moved a total distance of 60 meters, its
displacement is 0 meter. Displacement is the object’s overall or net change in position. It refers to how far out of place an
object is from its initial position.
Reference frame is an object that never move or not in motion for example, when you see a ball roll down a street, you can tell
the ball is moving because the frame of reference is the streets, whatever may be on the side of the roads, or the Earth. All of
these are frames of reference. All measurements of motion will be compared to a frame of reference.

4.5 Application Cite activities/events in which reference frame, distance and displacement is involved.
5 minutes
4.6 Assessment Directions: Choose the best answer from the given choices.
10 minutes Write the letter of your choice on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Which refers to the length of the entire path travelled by an

object?
A. Displacement B. Distance C. Motion
D. Time
2. Which of the following measures the length of the straight
line that connects the object’s point or origin and its point of
destination?
A. Motion B. Distance C.
Test Displacement D. Point of reference
3. Which of the following best differentiates distance from
displacement?
A. Distance is a vector quantity while displacement is a scalar
quantity.
B. Distance always follows a straight line while displacement
does not always follow a straight line.
C. Distance is the total length of the entire path travelled by
an object while displacement is the shortest distance between
the object’s two positions.
D. Displacement is the total length of the entire path
travelled by an object while distance is the shortest distance
between the object’s two positions.

4-5. A ball is rolled 2 meters to the East, then rolled 1 meter

to the left. It is again rolled 2 meters to the South. (a)What
was the distance of the ball? (b)What was the displacement of
the ball?
4.7 Assignment In your assignment notebook. Answer the following.
5 minutes Preparing for the next lesson. 1. What is speed?
2. What is velocity?
4.8 Concluding Activity Do object travel the same distance?
minutes How does displacement affect the distance?
