It’s all about prisms ma’am

Prisms means?

Very good!
It is a solid shape that is bound on all its
B.Motivation sides by plane faces ma’am

Okay class, before we proceed on our

discussion let’s have motivation first

I have square pyramid here and 3 numbers

each number have questions and all you
need to do is answer the question.

Is that clear?
Very good so who wants to pick a number?
Come here in front then read and answer
the question yes ma’am

Okay pick a number then read and answer

the question

ma’am

Number 1 ma’am!
- What is the shape of the base of the
Very good! Next.. pyramid
- Triangle ma’am

Okay pick a number

Ma’am

Good job! Next.. Number 3 ma’am

- What is the shape of each face?
- 4 Triangular faces ma’am

Ma’am

Very good! Number 2 ma’am

- What is the shape of each space?
- all lateral faces are triangles ma’am

C.Presentation
Surface Areas of Pyramids
Pyramids are 3D geometric shapes or solid
objectives, where the base is a polygon and
all other faces called lateral faces , are
triangles that meet at the apex, or vertex.

pyramid can also have other polygons as its

base, like a pentagon or a hexagon, but we
will focus on pyramids with triangular or
rectangular bases. Additionally, we will
assume the following symmetry in our
pyramids.

Right and Regular Pyramids

Right Pyramids – a right pyramid is a

pyramid whose perpendicular height meets
the base at its center (or centroid). In other
words, the apex of a right pyramid is
located directly above the center of the
base. A regular pyramid is a right pyramid
whose base is a regular polygon.

Regular Pyramids - All lateral faces of a

regular pyramid are congruent triangles.
Let’s try to find out the surface area of
pyramid

Formula
bh
SA = L.A + B ÷ 2 or SA = 4( )
2

SA = 2bh + s2
= (2) × (5 cm) ×(9cm)
= 90 cm2 + s2
= 90 cm2 + 25cm2
=115 cm2

The surface area of pyramid is 115 cm2

Let’s go and try to find out the square

pyramid

This time we are going to use another way

of solving for its surface area but first let us
encode are figure and identify it base and
lateral faces here we have again 1 square as
it base and the formula for its area would s2
Next for its lateral faces instead of
counting the 4 triangle separately we are
going to try to join them together and form
a parallelogram

Here we can see that it some of the basis of

are triangle is just the same as the some of
the side of are base which is square
therefore, we can say that these side is just
the same as half of a perimeter of are base
which is square

Now let’s try and solve for a surface area

let us add the lateral areas + base areas

ps
SA= + s2
2
= (20 cm )(9 cm)
2
= 90 cm + (5cm) (5cm)
2

= 90 cm2 + 25cm2
= 115cm2
The surface area of square pyramid is 115
cm2

Now let’s move to the rectangular pyramid

and find out the surface area
First let us get the perimeter of are base.
To get the perimeter of a rectangle we are
going to use the formula:

ps
SA = + lw
2

( 2l +2 w ) s
=
2
(18 m+12m)(8 m)
=
2
= 240 ÷ 2
= 120 m2
Next will let us get the of are base which is
L × W so that would be
(9m) (6m)
=120 m2 + 54m2
= 174 m2
The surface area of a rectangular pyramid
is 174 m2

Now let’s move to the triangular pyramid

and find the surface area

PS
SA = +
2
B
= (S 1+S 2+ S 3)S
2
( 13 m) (8 m)
=
2
(6 m)(2 m)
=52 m2 +
2
None ma’am
=
52 m2 + 6m2
= 58 m2
The surface area of triangular pyramid is
58 m2
Always remember the formula of every Lateral areas + base areas ma’am
surface area.

Again the formula of surface area is Lateral Perimeter upper base + base times height
areas (L.A) + Base areas (B) divided by 2 ma’am

Surface Area of Pyramid

= L.A + B Perimeter upper base + s2 ma’am
Surface Area of Square Pyramid
ps
= + s2
2
Surface Area of Rectangular Pyramid Perimeter upper base + length × width
ps
= + lw
2
Surface area of Triangular Pyramid
ps bh
= +
2 2

Now class do you have questions?

Okay I hope that you are learned today so

now I have some questions for you Yes ma’am

D.Generalization
1. What is the formula of pyramid?

- Very good! How about the

triangular? Yes ma’am

- Correct how about the square

pyramid?
The perimeter of the base is the sum of the
sides.
- Very good how about the
rectangular pyramid? ps bh
- Very good everyone! +
2 2
= (s1 + s2) s

E.Application
= (16in) (5in)
So now I will group you into 2
= 80÷2
group, I prepare 2 questions that
= 40in2 + (8in) (5in) = 40÷2
you will answer with solution and
= 40in2 + 20in2
you will choose representative to
write it on the board is that clear? = 60in2

Great!

I will give you 5 minutes to answer

The perimeter of the base is 4s since it is a
Group 1: Find the lateral surface area of a square.
regular pyramid with a triangular base if
each edge of the base measures 8 inches ps
+ s2
and the slant height is 5 inches. 2
= (4) (16) = 64in
= (64in) (17in)
2
= 1088 ÷ 2 = 544in2
544in2 +(16in) (16in)
= 544in2 + 256in2
= 800in2

Group 2: Find the total surface area of a

regular pyramid with a square base if each
edge of the base measures 16 inches, the
slant height of a side is 17 inches and the
altitude is 15 inches.
