Your perceptions of classroom management


Answer the following questions which will help you to understand how you perceive the key
concepts of classroom management.
 When you enter a classroom, in what ways can you tell if it is managed effectively or
ineffectively?
 What can a teacher do to manage a classroom in an effective manner?
 To what extent do you think your understanding of “misbehavior” and “discipline” differs
from students’ understandings?
 What kinds of off-task behavior do students perform? Why do they do this?

It is of vital importance to manage the classroom effectively for a teacher in order to enhance
the cognitive development, personal growth, social and moral values of students. It is claimed that a
poor classroom management makes teachers less focus on teaching and creates a hostile
environment for learning. Students from those classes are not aware of how important self-
disciplines and hard work and the result have been the lack of self-motivation, self-understanding,
self-control, self-evaluation and self-management. Therefore, teachers must have the ability to
balance students’ organized, ordered, focused, attentive on task – effective classroom management
which leads to positive learning environment.
It can be said that the classroom is effectively managed when students take responsibility and
accountability in establishing a distinct classroom routine and they are encouraged to adopt a
positive mindset and behave obediently, giving an equal opportunity to learn with distinct rules and
boundaries. Further, teachers must be a positive role model and demonstrate the ways that students
should behave in the classroom. This means teachers must show their respects to the students by
listening to their ideas and ensuring that every student knows that they are valued and respected in
the class. Moreover, to become an effective positive environment, students must be stimulated to
have a love of leaning by fun and effective activities and practical investigations which can foster
students’ personal growth as well as academic development.
On the other hand, classroom is said to be ineffective when students are not well-trained and
organized to achieve their goals and personal development and they don’t even know what they
exactly want to become. And also, if it is not clearly stated rules and regulations in the classroom in
agreement with students, misbehaviours can occur between themselves and teacher due to the lack
of self-discipline and self-management. Moreover, severe punishment can be
