Some people think that it is more beneficial to take part in sports which are played in

tennis or swimming, is better. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or
experience.

WRITING TASK 1
The line chart illustrates the number of inquiries sent to the Tourist Information Office in a
particular city via three means of communication, between January and June in 2011.

It is clear that visitors to the city made more inquires in person and via telephone, while written
letters and emails became the least common choices. Additionally, the number of enquiries in
person experienced the most dramatic change among the different options.

In January, the Tourist Information Office received 900 telephone enquiries, while just under
800 letters and emails were received. Not many tourists chose to ask for information in person,
with just over 400 queries. Over the next three months, the telephone still remained the most
popular method of enquiry, at approximately 1000 queries.

Meanwhile, the number of enquires made in person saw considerable growth to

800, surpassing the figures for emails and postal enquires. From March to June, enquires in
person were the most common method of inquiry. By June, the number of in person
enquires soared by more than 1,000 to peak at 1,900. During this period, there was also a
significant rise in the figure for telephone enquiries, from 1000 to 1600. By contrast, fewer
people sent emails or letters to make enquires, with slightly less than 400 enquires in May and
June.
WRITING TASK 2

Some people argue that playing team sports provides people with more benefits as opposed to participating in
individual sports. Personally, I believe that both types of sports can provide a range of benefits to people, and it
depends on what benefits each individual wishes to achieve as to which sport they should choose to play.

On the one hand, team sports, such as football and basketball, provide a number of benefits to those who play. For
example, team sports give players the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, like teamwork and
communication skills, which will not only help people in their day-to-day social interactions but also benefit them
in their workplace. In addition, team sports also offer players the chance to develop a sense of unity, friendship,
and sportsmanship between teammates, which can really add value to people’s lives by making them feel a part of
something.

On the other hand, individual sports, like tennis and swimming, also have their merits. When someone plays an
individual sport, it usually gives them more opportunities to enhance their personal skills, such as being able to
manage emotions, cope with stress, and build confidence and self-esteem. When people are playing an individual
sport, they usually have no one else to rely on for support during the game or match, and therefore, individuals
will need to develop a strong mindset to be able to deal with and overcome any setbacks they may face. Individual
sports also provide better opportunities for people to challenge themselves by setting goals and achieving personal
bests.

Overall, I feel that all sports offer great benefits for people’s mental and physical health, and that people should
choose whatever sport they are most interested in playing.

Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum
legal age for driving a car or motorbike. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or
experience.
Write at least 250 words.

WRITING TASK 1

The bar chart illustrates how much waste was collected by a recycling centre over five consecutive years,
starting in 2011.

It is clear that the total amount of waste collected each year followed similar trends and only fluctuated
slightly. Additionally, while waste paper was the most collected type of recyclable waste, the opposite
was true for garden waste during the period.

In 2011, paper was the most collected type of waste, at just under 60 tons, while about 50 tons of glass
was collected. Meanwhile, there was approximately 35 tons of discarded tin collected, and 32 tons of
plastic waste.

The amount of collected waste paper hit the lowest point of approximately 40 tons in 2013 before rising
to over 70 tons in 2015, which was the highest figure for all observed years. Meanwhile, the figures for
the other types of waste all witnessed fluctuations throughout the period, with 52 tons of glass, 39 tons of
tin and 35 tons of garden waste being collected in the last year.

WRITING TASK 2

Some people believe that raising the minimum driving age is the best solution to enhance road safety. I
disagree with this idea because I believe that other methods are equally important and should be taken
into account as well.

On the one hand, I agree that increasing the minimum age for getting a driving licence can be an
effective road safety measure. Firstly, since people are often more mature and have more life
experience when they get older, they can make quicker and wiser decisions to avoid dangerous
situations on the road compared to younger drivers. My father, for example, will never use his phone
when driving as he knows that he could easily lose his concentration and cause an accident. Secondly,
raising the minimum driving age can allow adolescents to have more time to sharpen their driving
skills. They can attend defensive driving courses to learn how to deal with different driving scenarios,
which will help them minimize the risk of accidents when driving in the future.

On the other hand, I think that better road safety can be achieved by other more effective methods
without increasing the driving age. To begin with, more stringent traffic regulations should be imposed,
which would act as a deterrent to would-be traffic law breakers. In Singapore, people who run red
lights are fined heavily, and therefore this will make them more responsible in order to avoid future
punishments. In addition, governments should allocate financial resources to improving public
transport, which would encourage citizens to drive their private cars or motorbikes less. As a result,
these residents will no longer worry about the risks that they may face when driving their own vehicles,
such as drunk driving or falling asleep at the wheel.

In conclusion, while raising the legal driving age can make our roads safer to some extent, I believe that
governments should also introduce other road safety measures that are discussed above

WRITING TASK 1

The pie charts show the proportions of people volunteering in various kinds of organisations, in
2008 and 2014.

It is clear that while volunteer participation in environmental, sport, and health care organisatons
increased, the opposite was true for other types of organisations. Additionally, the percentages of
health care volunteers were by far the lowest during the two years.

In 2008, volunteering in educational organisations was the most common choice, accounting for
nearly a quarter of all volunteers, while 21% and 18% of volunteers took part in environmental
and art projects respectively. 15% of volunteers worked in sports organisations, and another 15%
in other organisations, while only 6% volunteered in health care.

In 2014, significantly more volunteers worked in environmental and sport

organizations compared with the other fields, at 29% and 25% respectively. Meanwhile, the
figures for art and other volunteers both fell by 6%. There was also a slight fall in volunteers
in educational organizations, at 17%, while volunteering in health care was still the
least preferred option, at only 8%.

WRITING TASK 2

Opinions diverge widely on the importance of different news sources. While some people consider
reading newspapers to be the most effectve way to receive news, I would argue that it is no longer the
best way to get the news thanks to the proliferaton of online news sources.

On the one hand, there are good grounds for arguing that newspapers stll hold the most popular positon
among newsreaders even though we are living in a digital world. Firstly, since newspapers have existed
long before the introducton of the internet, most senior citzens have developed a habit of reading a
newspaper every day, and they do not want to change this habit. Secondly, newspapers are considered a
more reliable source of informaton compared to other sources nowadays. This is because newspapers are
usually writen by professional journalists, and are thoroughly checked, edited and censored prior to their
publicaton.

On the other hand, the Internet has become an increasingly dominant news source these days due to the
benefts it offers. The frst thing that atracts people to reading news online is its easy access. With the
widespread presence of the Internet, people with portable devices, such as a smartphone, can access a
huge storage of news in just a few clicks. Furthermore, online news channels have brought a greater
reading experience to readers, thanks to the constant advancement in technology, which has made it
possible to upload videos and audio recordings online. For instance, soccer fans these days can re-watch
their favourite matches whenever they want with only a laptop connected to the Internet, which a mere
newspaper cannot do.
In conclusion, while raising the legal driving age can make our roads safer to some extent, I believe that
governments should also introduce other road safety measures that are discussed above.
