POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS (16EE603)
B. Tech 3rd Year (AY: 2020-2021)
MID – I Key

SECTION I
No. Questions (1 to 5)
1 Define per-unit value and mention any two advantages of per-unit system.
The per-unit value of any quantity is defined as the ratio of actual value in any unit to the base or
reference value in the same unit. Any quantity is converted into per unit quantity by dividing the
numeral value by the chosen base value of the same dimension. The per-unit value is dimensionless.

Advantages of using per unit (or percent) are:

1. Results can be represented in magnitudes where all similar circuit quantities can be
compared directly.
2. Equivalent impedance of any transformer is the same when referred to either the primary
or the secondary side.
3. Impedance of a transformer in a three-phase system is the same regardless of the winding
connections (wye-delta, delta-wye, wye-wye, or delta-delta)
2 List all possible matrices used in power system analysis.
Primitive impedance matrix, primitive admittance matrix, node element incidence matrix, bus
element incidence matrix, etc.
3 Outline the significance of slack-bus, and list specified parameters at slack-bus.
Slack bus is taken as reference where the magnitude and phase angle of the voltage are specified.
This bus makes up the difference between the scheduled loads and generated power that are caused
by losses in the network.

4 List the different modifications for Z-bus.

Modification of Bus Impedance Matrix
 Adding a New Bus to the Reference Bus
 Adding a New Bus to an Existing Bus through an Impedance
 Adding an Impedance to the Reference Bus from an Existing Bus
 Adding an Impedance between two Existing Buses

Internal Question Paper (GMRIT : QMS)

5 Define voltage control bus and list different volage control busses in power system.
This bus is also called the P-V bus, and on this bus, the voltage magnitude corresponding to
generate voltage and true or active power P corresponding to its rating are specified. Voltage
magnitude is maintained constant at a specified value by injection of reactive power. The reactive
power generation Q and phase angle δ of the voltage are to be computed.
SECTION II (Long Answer Questions)
(Answer all the Questions) 3 x 10 = 30 Marks
No. Questions (6 to 11)
A generator is rated 600MVA, 35KV; its star connected winding has a reactance of 1.4 PU.
Find the ohmic value of reactance of winding. If the generator is working in a circuit for which
the specified values are 400 MVA, 30 KV. Then find the P.U value of reactance of generator
winding on specified base.

Draw the per unit impedance diagram of the network shown in the figure. Choose 40 MVA
and 132 kV as base quantities.
