NANOTECHNOLOGY
Module 12
A Nanometre is a unit of length in the metric
system, equal to one billionth of a metre (10-9)
Technology is the making, usage and knowledge of
tools, machine and techniques in order to solve a
problem or perform a specific function.
2
NANOTECHNOLOGY – is the study of
manipulating matter on an atomic scale
Refers to the constructing and engineering of the
functional system at very micro or atomic level
A NANOMETER is one billionth of a meter, roughly
the width of tree or four atoms. The average
human hair is about 25,000 nanometers wide.

was developed when Scanning Tunnelling
Microscope(STM) was invented in 1981 by Gerd Binning
and Heinrich Rohrer
An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was also invented in
1982 by scientists of IBM Zurich research Laboratory.
The Nano breakthroughs are worth described as “The
Manufacturing Technology of the 21th century”.

Historical Breakthrough of
Nanotechnology
6
Early pieces of evidences of the application
and utilization of nano materials happened many
years centuries ago.
In India, 600B.C., there was steel
manufactured from nanotubes and nanowires.
One of the collections in a British museum,
a Licurg's bowl showed unusual physical
properties of changing colors as exposed to
sunlight.
Richard Feynman(1918-1988)
Richard Feynman, the Father of
Nanotechnology, started the
speculation of working atoms on its
supermolecular scale.
Application of
Nanotechnology
▰ Man continues to quest for knowlegde, achieve satisfaction,
or even anticipate whether the near future will be a “boon or
bane”.
▰ The application and utilization of nanotechnology in the
fabrication of materials and devices cannot escape to this
question “Will this make humanity lazy and solely dependent on
technological advancements?” but it is indespensable in health
and medicine, electronics, engineering, and biology.

A. Health and Medicine Applications
Nanotechnology is already broadening the medical
tools, knowledge, and therapies currently available to
clinicians.
Nanomedicine, the application of nanotechnology in
medicine, draws on the natural scale of biological
phenomena to produce precise solutions for disease
prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
