Etymology

Perhaps derived from the active participle of ‫َر ِهَب‬‎ ‎(rahiba, “to dread”‎), from the root ‫ر ه ب‬‎ ‎(r-h-b‎),
with the intermediate meanings "dreader", "God-fearer", "God-worshiper", "venerator"; compare ‫َر َهب‬
(rahab, “veneration, respect”) and ‫َر ْهَبة‬‎(rahba, “terror; dread; awe”).
