2. Through a very narrow gap of height h, a thin plate of large extent is pulled at a velocity
V. On one side of the plate is oil of viscosity μ1 and on the other side oil of viscosity μ2.
Calculate the position of the plate so that (a) the shear force on the two sides of the plate
5-

is equal; (b) the pull required to drag the plate is minimum. [10]
OR
3.a) Show that the centre of pressure of any lamina immersed under liquid is always below its
20

centroid.
b) Two horizontal plates are placed 1.25 cm apart, the space between them being filled with
oil of viscosity 14 poises. Calculate the shear stress in oil if upper plate is moved with a
19

velocity of 2.5 m/s. [5+5]

4. What is meant by stability of a floating body? Explain the stability of a floating body
A

with reference to its metacentric height. Give neat sketches. [10]

5.a) Differentiate between:

i) stream function and velocity function
ii) Rotational and irrotational flows.
b) An open circular tank of 20 cm diameter and 100 cm long contains water upto a height of
60 cm. The tank is rotated bout its vertical axis at 300 r.p.m., find the depth of parabola
formed at the free surface of water. [5+5]
6.a) What is pitot-tube? How will you determine the velocity at any point with the help of
pitot-tube?
b) A 0.25 m diameter pipe carries oil of specific gravity 0.8 at the rate of 120 litres per
second and the pressure at a point A is 19.62 kN/m2 (gage). If the point A is 3.5 m above
the datum line, calculate the total energy at point A in metres of oil. [5+5]
