Simple Sentence

Compound Sentence

*Usually separated with a comma and a conjunction, a semicolon, or a dash. 

T​ortoises​ ​are desert animals​ so ​Maxwell can’t swim. 
Tortoises are desert animals​ is a complete sentence and so is ​Maxwell can’t swim​. 
 
Complex Sentence 
A sentence that has ​one​ ​independent clause  
and ​one​ ​dependent clause​. 
Maxwell​ ​is so fashionable​ ​because of his many hats. 
Maxwell is so fashionable​ is a complete sentence but,  
because of his many hats​ is ​not​ a complete sentence.
