Psychology Assignment

Q1. Take a case and explain in detail the type of symptoms or problems
the person is facing in day today life.
There is a boy whose name is Shubham. We were studying in the same
class. Whenever friends or even school trips were planned to be
surrounded or contain water bodies, Shubham just denied it to come or
said he didn't like to swim in water. Many times, we tried to convince
him, but he just denied. After a while, I got to know from his parents
that he has a phobia of drowning but due to this he was facing many
problems in his everyday life like, when his friends or family decided to
go place like water park, fishing, swimming pool and go to beaches he
was unable to go with them, many times his friends and family had
cancelled a plan because of him being unable to join them; that’s why he
felt upset and didn't feel belonged and couldn't enjoy with them.
Q2. Explain in detail the case history. (What has happened with the
person?)
When shubham was in 7th grade he and his father used to go to
swimming classes to teach him swimming . One day before starting the
teaching session his father remembered that he had to do some important
calls regarding his work to his office colleague. His father told him to sit
on bench near the pool for some time and stay away from the group of
trained boys , but the shubham became impatient because of other
children playing and enjoying in water and he ignored his father’s advice
and went in pool to play. But since he didn't know how to swim, in a
few seconds he started feel like he was drowning.he tried to come out
from water but couldn't help himself and hence was unable to do so.
When people noticed that shubham is drowning, he had fainted already
due to suffocation . He was unconscious , his father and other people
took him out of the pool and gave him a CPR, shubham had gained his
consciousness and was fine later but the phobia of drowning had started
after that he always try to avoid water.
Q3. Give the psychological explanation of the symptoms or the
problems using appropriate learning theory that is relevant to the
problem.
Cognitive learning theory states that learning requires cognition or the
influence of an organism's thought process. Cognitive learning theory
has three main components, which are latent learning, insight learning,
and learned helplessness. In the case of Shubham , since he had an
unpleasant past experience with water , he had developed a phobia of
water, which mainly involves the theory of classical conditioning .
Hence, cognitive learning theory cannot be much applicable in the case
of Shubham, as there is no indication or symptoms of either latent
learning or insight learning. There might be some sort of learned
helplessness, since he can escape or find a way out of his phobia (if
helped by a professional and with his consent), but fails to do so because
of the past unpleasant experience of failing to save himself and
drowning.
Q4. Suggest necessary remedies which you have learned from
psychology Classes that would be effective for the person to overcome
the current problem.
I will try to understand what he thinks about or how deeply he is scared
and feel about his phobia and try to help him find a way out if slowly
with small steps such as by first explaining and gaining his trust that
nothing dangerous will happen again and take him closer to the water
boy if he is willing to and then when he feels comfortable gradually take
him on the water body and make him reduce his extreme fear. After that
firstly I will suggest them prefer a swimming coach to deal with water
and support him and advice him to use life jacket, take proper
precautions and safety measures until he learns how to swim, he should
pay attention to coach how they are dealing with water, listen carefully
to the instructions given about swimming by the coach and observe other
people how they dealing with water. Shubham should be advised to
memorize the basic instructions and slowly apply the methods to swim
that taught by his coach like steps for that particular stroke (butterfly or
freestyle etc.) while swimming. Then shubham have to imitate that
instruction and lessons that given by his coach; finally all the actions are
depend on his desire, as in if he really wanted to get rid of the phobia he
would automatically try his level best to overcome the fear .
